Miami rowing crews make history at Henley Royal Regatta. Douglas alum wins MLB challenge

For the first time in history, two rowing crew programs represented Miami in England at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, the world’s most iconic rowing event.

The Miami Rowing Club and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School Crew secured their places in this renowned competition, showcasing Miami’s growing prominence in the rowing community.

The Miami Rowing Club boat -- consisting of Mateo Montero (MAST Academy), George Pesin (Coral Reef), Michael Kourakos (Palmer Trinity), and Sebastian Sanchez (Gulliver Prep) -- prequalified for the Fawley Cup Challenge. Their outstanding performance throughout the 2023-24 season in the United States earned them that coveted spot.

Belen Jesuit’s boat with Belen student athletes -- featuring Aiden Furness, Felix Caceres, David Caban, and Benjamin Ramos -- clinched its place in the Fawley Cup by beating 50 other boats in the qualifying race.

Additionally, Belen Jesuit’s crew of eight, also all from Belen — Arturo Castelo, Evan Martinez, Andres Madrigal, Marco Alberni, Nicolas Battistini, Victor Alberni, Marco Mantecon, Peter Schmidt, and cox George Maloof — prequalified for the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup, following a winning season at home. Belen‘s crew previously participated at Henley in 2015 in the Princess Elizabeth Cup.

The Henley Royal Regatta, established in 1839, is held annually on the River Thames in Henley-on-Thames, England. It is one of the most prestigious and storied rowing events in the world, attracting top crews from across the globe. The regatta features more than 200 races of an international standard, with participants ranging from Olympians to up-and-coming rowers from various backgrounds.

How the locals fared

Miami Rowing Club’s quad faced local Henley favorite, Maidenhead Rowing Club in the Fawley Cup but fell short to the British crew by two boat lengths.

Belen’s quad also competed in the Fawley Cup against another local Henley crew, Shiplake, and were beat by 2¼ boat lengths

Belen’s 8 boat was beat by the Australian crew of Southport School by 1¼ boat lengths in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup.

Baseball

Stoneman Douglas alum Roman Anthony came from behind - way behind - to win the inaugural MLB Futures Skills Showcase at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas.

His mindset going into the last round of this cool hitting competition -- he chuckled -- “Don’t get last.”

Well, in last entering the last round, he did not finish last. That’s for sure.

Anthony’s home run hitting prowess surged him into first, thus winning the whole thing.

Eight of the Top 100 MLB prospects participated in this hitting event during MLB All-Star Game Weekend. Anthony is a member of the Boston Red Sox minor leagues.

Anthony said via the Portland Sea Dogs PR: “It’s always great when you get those invites and get noticed for all the work you put in; so it was a great time.”

Termarr Johnson (Pittsburgh Pirates minor leagues), the leader after the first two rounds of competition, didn’t hit any homers in the final event, leaving the door open for Anthony, who hit an event high six home runs in that round. His 471-foot homer to right centerfield and another off the right field foul pole not only made him a crowd favorite but also secured his title.

Anthony noted: “It was amazing getting to see all the guys, seeing so many guys who we play against so often and so many guys in different leagues on different teams that I’ve known and kept up with through travel ball and through high school and getting to share the dugout with them was awesome.”

The eight prospects — four from each league — participated in this batting skills showcase, inspired by fan-favorite baseball video games of the past and present, giving fans another way to focus on baseball’s future stars after the debut of Spring Breakout earlier this year. Those two events, along with the long-running Arizona Fall League, form a trifecta of prospect showcases stretching across the calendar.

The MLB Futures Skills Showcase aired on tape delay on Sunday, July 14 on the MLB Network as well as on MLB.TV, MLB.com and in the MLB App.

About Roman Anthony
