Somerset Silver Palms softball routs Gibbons, sets up rematch with Coral Springs Charter
Despite returning most of its roster from last year’s state runner-up squad, it took the Somerset Silver Palms softball team a little bit to find some momentum.
The Stallions are hitting their stride at the right time.
Led by Caylee Cerda and Arlene Sordo, who each had three RBI, Somerset took care of business against Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons with an 11-0 victory in six innings in a Region 4-3A semifinal at Palmetto Bay Park.
The Stallions (21-6-1) will next travel to Coral Springs to face a familiar foe as they take on Coral Springs Charter, which routed Westminster Christian 8-0 on Tuesday, in the regional final at 6 p.m. Friday at Betti Stradling Park.
This will be the third consecutive season the teams meet in the regional finals with Somerset winning last season and Coral Springs Charter winning the year before.
“We have three seniors, but we have a seventh grader at first base and a third baseman playing through injuries, and a ninth grade pitcher that normally is a center fielder,” Somerset Silver Palms coach Gator Rebhan said. “So it took a little bit for things to come together.”
Cerda went 2 for 3 with a double and Sordo went 1 for 2 with a double.
The freshman pitcher Rebhan referred to was Ava Stevens, who struck out 10 and threw a six-inning no-hitter, allowing one walk. Stevens also went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Taylor Rebhan went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Zoe Matteo went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Brigitte Valdera went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
