Carrollton, Calvary Christian, Palmer Trinity win regional track and field championships
Tuesday’s Class 2A-1A regional track and field meet at Calvary Christian was a mixed bag of outstanding performances.
Take Ransom Everglades senior distance runner and Wake Forest signee David Serra.
He was completely in a different league. He won the 1600 4:16.32, just over 13 seconds better than his nearest competitor. In the 3200 Serra ran a personal best 8:58.82, distancing himself from the field by almost a minute.
“My coach told me if I felt good, he said to push it and even though I ran in the 4x800, my legs felt pretty good,” Serra said. “Come state I have more in me for sure. Today was an 8 out of 10 effort in the 1600 and I have more to give.”
Serra entered the regional after winning a cross-county title in November and the team events he specialized in last year as a junior.
Team champions in Class 2A were Carrollton (girls), Calvary Christian (boys) and in Class 1A was Palmer Trinity (girls) and Benjamin (boys). The top two finishers in each event were automatic qualifiers for the state meet at the University of North Florida on May 15-16.
Brooke Hooper of Pine Crest, who had been hampered by knee injury a portion of the season, appeared poised to defend her Class 2A state title in the 1600 following her strong performance in the regional meet on Tuesday.
She ran a dominating 5:00 flat which was just shy of her 4:56 at last year’s state meet.
Darius Smith, who will be a senior defensive back for the Chaminade-Madonna football team, proved Tuesday the speed he possesses.
“It doesn’t matter,” said Smith. “Whether it’s track or football I’m going to work on it. I’m going to become faster and faster and develop. I love both sports very much. I love competing.”
Smith won the 100 (10.64), the 200 (21.56) and was part of the winning 4x100 relay team (42.09) to help the Lions finish second behind Benjamin in Class 1A.
The victory in the relay came in a unconventional way.
Chaminade failed to finish the race initially when the runner in the lane next to them dropped the baton and interfered with the Lions effort on the exchange.
After filing a complaint and providing video evidence, Chaminade was allowed to re-run the race between the 3200 girls races. Using lane eight, the Lions ran 42.08 to be declared the winner, which eventually helped them move into second in the team standings.
The Calvary Christian boys team got a huge boost from senior Stone Bureau.
He won three events capturing the long jump (22-3), triple jump (45-4.25) and high jump (6-3.5).
“I had my legs today,” Bureau said. “I had my mark in the long jump, had enough height to land properly. I had a personal best in the high jump. And for the triple jump I controlled myself and when I go to the pit, I was able to control my landing.”
Henry Stark of Palmer Trinity was a double winner with long distance victories in the 1600 (4:19.59) and 3200 (9:26.58).
Daniella Perez-Cartaya of Palmer Trinity won the 1600 (5:21.65) and the 3200 (11:46.38). Noelani
Sadler was also a double winner for the Falcons as she won the 100 hurdles (14.49) and 400 hurdles (1:04.39).
