Carrollton softball wins conference title. Plus district and region semifinal tennis and more
The Carrollton girls’ softball team defeated Miami Country Day 9-2 to win the South Florida Softball Conference Championship.
The Cyclones (12-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. They added one in the third and three more in the fifth, building a 7-0 advantage.
Winning pitcher Madelyn Althage allowed two runs (one earned) off five hits and three walks, while striking out two. Isabella Whitby sparked the offense going 2-2 with a triple, a home run and four RBI.
Adding to that were Amalia Neff 1-3 with two runs and two stolen bases, Allyson Wolfson 1-3 with a hit-by-a-pitch and three runs and Veronica Franzino 1-4 with a run, a sacrifice and two stolen bases.
The champs are Paulina Ross, Veronica Franzino, Grace Diez, Madelyn Althage, Amalia Neff, Emma Althage, Elizabeth Moss, Sylvia Figueroa, Cecilia Alwine, Allyson Wolfson, Isabella Whitby, Camila Suarez, Lola Rodriguez. The coaches are Omar Rodriguez, Sarah Lamper and Matt Althage.

By beating Miami Beach, the Braddock girls’ softball team evened its mark at 8-8.

Post-season tennis
In region semifinal tennis action, the 2A girls’ District 16 runner-up Gulliver Prep edged District 15 champ Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines 4-3.
The 2A boys’ District 16 runner-up MAST Academy eliminated District 15 champ Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines.
The 1A girls’ District 16 runner-up Riviera Prep defeated District 15 champ Divine Savior.
In 1 A boys, District 16 runner-up Ransom Everglades defeated District 15 champ Miami Country Day.
In 4A boys, District 14 runner-up West Broward beat District 13 champ Stoneman Douglas.
The team district champion and district runner-up advanced to the region semifinals. District champions were the hosts, competing against district runners-up from other districts. Winners will battle for the region title on Thursday.
