Doral baseball wins tournament. American Heritage volleyball on a roll. Plus softball and more

The Doral Academy baseball team won the Jackie Robinson Tournament in Daytona Beach.

The nationally-ranked Firebirds went 4-0 to improve to 15-1. In the finals, Doral defeated South Dade 5-2. Winning pitcher Sebastian Berrios went the distance for the victory. It was the second time the Firebirds beat South Dade.

Doral also defeated Melbourne and Viera.

More baseball

Junior pitcher Russell Royce hurled a shutout as Miami Beach defeated North Miami Beach 3-0. Jacob Gaynor made a fine defensive play and drove in the winning run.

With the game scoreless, Gaynor caught a fly ball in centerfield and then threw a perfect strike to home to nab a runner trying to score from third.

Basketball honors

St. Thomas Aquinas’s Khadee Hession, the Class 6A Player of the Year, was third in the voting for 2024 Florida Dairy Farmers Ms. Basketball, following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school coaches and media representatives.

Miami Country Day’s Kayla Nelms, the Class 3A Player of the Year, finished fourth, and Schoolhouse Prep’s Adena Webster, the Class 2A Player of the Year, sixth.

Trinity Turner from Dr. Phillips-Orlando was voted Ms. Basketball. The senior guard, who signed to play at the University of Georgia, averaged 18.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 3.3 steals per game for the Class 7A state champs.

Miami Country Day’s Ochiel Swaby, the 2024 Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year, finished fifth in the voting for state’s overall girls’ basketball coach of the year honors, following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school coaches and media representatives.

Class 6A Coach of the Yeay Oliver Berens of St. Thomas Aquinas was sixth and and Class 5A Coach of the Year Greg Farias of American Heritage-Plantation was seventh.

Anthony Jones of Dr. Phillips-Orlando won the state’s overall girls’ basketball coach of the year award. In 15 years at Dr. Phillips, Jones has a career record of 310-134 with six state championships (2011-13 and 2022-24).

Football

Champion Charity Inc. -- a recognized charitable organization dedicated to empowering youth through academic financial support, athletic advancement and personal development -- announces its inaugural HBCU Football Showcase.

The event occurs Saturday, April 6 from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. inside Lauderhill Sports Park, 7500 West Oakland Park Boulevard in Lauderhill.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) coaches. Thanks to the generous support from All Health Matters

Foundation, this free event will showcase nearly 100 student athletes from the South Florida community.
