During the FHSAA State Wrestling Championships, two sets of brothers from the area won state titles with three of them completing undefeated seasons.

Cardinal Gibbons sophomore Michael Mocco (41-2) capped off another strong season by winning a Class 1A state title at 215 pounds at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. Mocco’s only two losses this season occurred at the prestigious Walsh Ironman Tournament in Ohio. He lost to the nation’s second-ranked and sixth-ranked high school wrestlers.

It marks Mocco’s second consecutive state title, after finishing first last season at 195 pounds at 44-1. He was third at state as an 8th grader for Coral Springs Charter.

Basketball

Orange Bowl is hosting its fourth annual Orange Bowl Florida High School Basketball Showcase, presented by Memorial Healthcare System on Saturday, March 9 at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center in Davie.

Similar to Orange Bowl’s football showcase, this free event will provide hundreds of local high school junior and senior basketball student-athletes an opportunity to meet college basketball coaches from across the country for a chance to receive aid or scholarships as they aspire to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

The event is open to boys and girls.

Each participant will compete in a series of tests, drills and scrimmages that best display each player’s various talents at their respective positions, followed by a meet and greet opportunity with coaches from approximately 30 NCAA Division II, III, NAIA and JUCO programs.

Since 2017, Orange Bowl’s high school showcases have generated more than $8-million in scholarships and financial aid for more than 400 high school student-athletes.

“The Orange Bowl Florida High School Basketball Showcase presented by Memorial Healthcare System is a perfect example of Orange Bowl’s continuing commitment to making an everlasting impact in our community,” said Orange Bowl Committee President & Chair Bradley Houser. “We are extremely proud of this event and the opportunity it affords student-athletes to secure financial aid for college to ultimately earn a higher education degree.”

To be eligible to participate in the basketball showcase, student-athletes must be a high school senior or junior who has not accepted a scholarship offer from a Division I program. In addition, it is recommended that participants have a 2.5 GPA or higher in 16 Core Courses and have an SAT score of at least 920 (math and verbal only), or have a composite ACT Score of 18 or higher or a sum score of 68 or higher.

“Empowering our youth through initiatives like the Orange Bowl Florida High School Basketball Showcase isn’t just about the game; it’s about investing in the health and well-being of our future,” said Leah A. Carpenter, Executive Vice President and COO, Memorial Healthcare System. “We are proud to support events that promote athleticism, teamwork, and community spirit, laying the foundation for a healthier tomorrow.”
