The Columbus wresling team won the John Raich Memorial Tournament at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School in Palm Beach Gardens.

The champion Explorers totaled 280 points. Runner-up Cardinal Gibbons scored 230, and Southridge was fifth with 205.5 points. Douglas was ninth of 25 schools with 97 points.

The South Dade wrestling team won the Cradle Cancer Invitational at Jensen Beach High School.

The Buccaneers scored 268.5 points to finish 69 points ahead of runner-up Minisink-New York. Southwest Miami was fourth of 34 teams at 175.

South Dade senior Sawyer Bartelt, who won at 215 pounds, is ranked No.1 in the country by Matscouts at 215 pounds. It is rare for a high school wrestler from Florida to obtain the top ranked spot.

Bartelt is not only a three-time FHSAA state champ, but he is undefeated (and never taken down) since joining South Dade his freshman season.

Miramar won the District 15-2A Duals at American Heritage in Plantation.

The Patriots beat St. Thomas Aquinas 70-9 in the finals.

Prior, Miramar defeated Plantation 71-12 and Archbishop McCarthy 60-21 to reach the finals. St. Thomas Aquinas beat Hollywood Hills 54-29 and edged American Heritage 42-38.

Archbishop McCarthy defeated McArthur 60-21, before losing to Miramar. The Mavericks then edged American Heritage 40-39 and beat St. Thomas Aquinas 72-12 to take runner-up honors.

American Heritage beat Dillard 45-35, before losing to St. Thomas Aquinas and Archbishop McCarthy.

Football state honors

Junior receiver Jayvan Boggs of Cocoa High School has been named the 2023 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school football coaches and media representatives.

Boggs, who was previously selected as the Class 2S Player of the Year, helped Cocoa to a 14-1 record and its second straight Class 2S state title with 93 receptions for 1,493 yards, averaged 16.1 yards per catch, and had a state-leading 23 touchdown catches. He has committed to Ohio State University for the 2025 recruiting cycle.

In an extremely close contest, with five finalists receiving at least four first-place votes, Boggs captured five of the 25 first-place votes and finished with 107 points.

Class 4S POY Myles Graham of Buchholz was the runner-up, also receiving five first-place votes and finishing with 98 points. Class 2M POY Ennio Yapoor of Norland was third (97 points), followed by Class 3S POY Lawal (LJ) McCray of Mainland (87), Class 1M POY Cedric Bailey of Chaminade-Madonna (78), Class 3M POY Joshua Townsend of Homestead (39) and Class 4M POY Tramell Jones of Mandarin (20).

The other finalists included Class 1S POY JP Pickles of North Florida Christian, Class 1R POY CJ Ingram of Hawthorne and Independent POY Anthony Barbar of Westminster Academy.

Travis Roland of Mainland High School has been named the 2023 Florida Dairy Farmers Football Coach-of-the-Year following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school football coaches and media representatives.

Roland led his team to a 14-1 record and the Class 3S state championship. It was Mainland’s first state football title since 2003. In three years at Mainland, Roland has posted a 30-10 record, including a state runner-up finish in 2022.

Roland garnered eight first-place votes and 135 points to finish ahead of Class 2M Coach-of-the-Year Dominick Ciao of Berkeley Prep, who picked up nine first-place votes and 121 points to finish as the runner-up.

Class 1S COY Jared Clark of Cardinal Mooney (70 points) finished third, followed by Class 1M COY Dameon Jones of Chaminade-Madonna (49), Class 3M COY Roger Harriott of St. Thomas Aquinas (39), Class 4S COY Marvin Frazier of Lakeland (34), Class 2S COY Ryan Schneider of Cocoa (29).

Rounding out the voting were Class 4M COY Dave Dunn of Columbus (24), Class 1R COY Cornelius Ingram of Hawthorne (20) and Independent COY Garrett Kruczek of The Master’s Academy (5).

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers commitment to the state’s youth. This marks the 32nd year of these unique awards as they honor the state’s top athletes and coaches in all FHSAA sanctioned sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.

Soccer

Vy Elo scored four goals for Miami Beach girls’ soccer in a victory over Hialeah and then scored twice and assisted on two other goals in a win over Coral Park.
