Cypress Bay, North Miami and more wrestlers continue to shine. Plus basketball and soccer info

Standout wrestler Mya Bethel of North Miami finished first for the second consecutive season at the Girls’ Knockout Christmas Classic at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.

Bethel, who went 5-0 at 155 pounds, beat USA world team member Jayla Harrison (RPA Wrestling) in the finals by pin at 1:49.

Teammates Shenshaila Baron (fourth at 170) and Isis Severe (fifth at 120) also helped the Pioneers place ninth of 50-plus teams.

Bethel, as a sophomore last season, went undefeated at 27-0 en route to winning an FHSAA state title at 155 pounds. She was undefeated her freshman season, too, going 25-0 to earn her first state title. She is a two-time Miami Herald All-Dade Girls’ Wrestler of the Year.

North Miami alum I-Cart Galumette was second at 110 pounds at the Girls’ Knockout Christmas Classic. Emma Bauknight (Spring Hill) pinned her in the finals at 2:38.

Sofia Delgado (Coral Park) also continues to excel, winning at 140 pounds by pinning Kendall Bibla (Matanzas) in 1:37.

At 115 pounds, Analy Picado (Braddock Wrestling) was first, beating Cameron Galvin (Freedom Orlando) 11-4 in the finals. At 235 pounds, Yoseline Perez (Soute Dade) pinned Rotchiva Clermont (Freedom Orlando) in the finals in 1:38.

At 125 pounds, Jasmine Jenkins-Bey (Columbus) was the runner-up, losing in the finals to Ciara Riner (Spring Valley High School) 12-5. At 145 pounds, Ailee Briggs (Key West) was second to Jennah Mustafa (Lake Wales) who won 6-1.

At 235 pounds, Alyssa Nazario (Miami Beach) was third, pinning Cheyenne Wigley (Mainland) in 3:23.

More tournament wrestling

The North Miami boys’ wrestling team finished fourth at the Bobby Stanley Varsity Duals at Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale.

Gerson Alette went 7-0 at 165 for the Pioneers. Teammates David Alexis (3-1 at 138), Davion Cooper (5-1 at 150) and Charly Sainteus (4-2 at 144) fared well, too.

Also at those Bobby Stanley Varsity Duals, the Cypress Bay boys’ team went 6-2 overall (4-1 on day two).

Cypress Bay 31, St. Thomas Aquinas 30; Cypress Bay 39, Dillard 18; Cypress Bay 36, North Miami 33; Cypress Bay 36, Coral Springs Charter 24; Cypress Bay 60, West Broward 18; Cypress Bay 51, Hollywood Hills 12; Belen Jesuit 34, Cypress Bay 32; Columbus 57, Cypress Bay 14.

Logan Shapiro (113 pounds) was 8-0, and Skyler Baretto (126 pounds) went 7-1.

Cypress Bay then placed fourth at the Somerset Scuffle in Pembroke Pines.

Roger Ravelo (190 pounds) was first, and Alex Persteins (165) second. Persteins lone loss was to a two-time state champ. Logan Shapiro (113) and Timo Nikolepolos (138) each third and Noah Sebug (175) fourth.

Soccer

Daniel Jurado scored the winner off an assist by Surya Gunawardena as the Miami Beach boys’ soccer team edged River Ridge-New Port Richey 1-0 during the Tampa Invitational Tournament.

Goalkeeper Dylan Felix recorded the shutout as the Hi-Tides improved to 9-3-1. River Ridge is 10-3.
