Pembroke Pines Charter boys’ basketball third at Junior Orange Bowl Classic. Plus more results
The Pembroke Pines Charter boys’ basketball team did well in the 35th annual Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Tournament at Westminster Christian in Palmetto Bay in Miami.
The Jaguars placed third, after beating Kings-Ohio 80-66. Josh Harris dominated from start to finish to lead the way. Harris not only led all scorers with 26 points but also grabbed 12 rebounds.
Ramez Zayed and Jeremy Elyzee enjoyed solid performances as well with 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Jaguars -- three seasons removed from the Class 5A state championship and currently ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 6A -- improved to 11-3.

Boosie Swan (13), Ryan Rodriguez (12) and Jayden Simmons (12) combined for 37 points as True North improved to 8-4. Swan also led all rebounders with 12. Palmetto, which fell to 6-6, was led by Santiago Henriquez and Marcos Alberich with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Cooper Whitby and Dwight Whipple also scored in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Whipple led the way defensively with 7 rebounds as Westminster is now 6-4.

GIRLS: Junior Orange Bowl: Seventh Place: Miami Norland 42, Palmer Trinity 33: After dropping the first two games of the tournament, the Vikings, who have struggled out of the gate this season, salvaged the third and final contest of the tournament. Shania Swan and Jasmine Johnson provided virtually all of their team’s offense by finishing with 20 and 16 points, respectively, while Myah Newton totaled 10 rebounds. It was only Norland’s third win of the season as the Vikings are now 3-9. Jade Leon (12 points) and Missy Nieves (11 points) led Palmer Trinity (6-6).

The three-day tournament featured eight boys’ teams, including three from out-of-state, and eight girls’ teams with three also out-of-state.
In the boys’ final, St. Andrew’s Episcopal-Maryland defeated Berkeley Prep-Tampa 49-38. In the girls’ final, Purcell Marian-Ohio beat James River Midlothian-Virginia 76-66. Also, Doral Academy finished third in the girls’ division, after beating Miami High 52-47.
