Edison flag football players qualify for nationals. Plus basketball and soccer results

With plenty of representation from Miami Edison, the Liberty City Warriors 17U girls’ flag football team won NFL regionals in Houston, qualifying for nationals in Orlando during the NFL’s Pro Bowl Weekend.

The Warriors went 4-0 at regionals, winning the championship game by defeating Texas Flurry (Blue) 19-0.

The regional champion 17U team includes Camille Candidate, Alana Johnson, Poetry Auguste, and Jahzarra Silvera of Miami Edison; Jakaira Hammer of Cottey University; Makayla Brown and Alexandria Harris of Florida Gateway College (Hammer, Brown and Harris are Miami Edison alum); Raynia Griffin of Dillard High School.

The Warriors 12U squad also won regionals, going 4-0, including beating the TFL Lady Colts 16-0 in the finals.

The coaches are Michael Duncan, Vincent Hall, Val Matheis, and Ken Simmons.

Basketball

The Lourdes girls’ basketball team improved to 11-1, after a close win over Schoolhouse Prep.

Senior Luciana Picasso grabbed 22 rebounds (15 defense, 7 offense), and sophomore Sophia Sandoval scored 16 points.

In a tight battle throughout, Lourdes led 22-19 at halftime en route to the 50-46 win and ninth consecutive victory.

Also in girls’ hoops, Dillard handed Cardinal Gibbons its first loss of the season, after eight consecutive wins. The Chiefs bounced back with a win over American Heritage-Delray.

St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ soccer edged Archbishop McCarthy. That’s 12 wins for the Raiders, which are 12-3-1, while the Mavericks suffered their first loss.

More top teams, Coral Park, Mater Lakes Academy and South Broward are unbeaten with Coral Park already at 11 wins.
