HEAT’s Kaii Winkler wins state Mr. Swimming honor. Plus basketball, golf and soccer results

Senior Kaii Winkler of South Florida HEAT and senior Gracie Weyant of Sarasota Riverview are the 2023 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. and Miss Swimming, respectively, following voting by a statewide panel of prep swim coaches.

This is the second consecutive year Winkler won the top state honor.

Also named the 2023 Class 1A Boys’ Swimmer of the Year, he won the 200-yard freestyle in a state record time of 1:32.68, breaking his own mark of 1:34.18 set last year. The time also broke the national high school record of 1:32.85 set by Aaron Shackell of Carmel, Indiana in February. Winkler added to his impressive resume by winning the 100-yard butterfly title with an All-American qualifying time of 46.33. He has committed to North Carolina State University.

Erika Pelaez also of South Florida HEAT is the Class 1A Girls’ Swimmer of the Year, which made her a finalist for Miss Swimming.

Andrew Eckhart of Sarasota High School and Peter Verhoef of The Bolles School-Jacksonville were named the state boys’ and girls’ Swimming Coaches of the Year, respectively. Eckhart’s team winning its fourth consecutive state title and Verhoef’s team its fifth..

Golf state honors

Katherine Schaefer, a senior from American Heritage-Plantation, was a finalist for Miss Golf, after winning the Class 2A state title to earn Class 2A Girls’ Golfer of the Year.

On the boys’ side, Lorenzo Rodriguez, a junior from Belen Jesuit, is the Class 2A Boys’ Golfer of the Year for winning the Class 2A state title. Class 1A Boys’ Golfer of the Year Alexander Weinberg, a junior from Pine Crest, won the Class 1A state title, making he and Rodriguez finalists for Mr. Golf.

For those top state honors, junior Mi Li of The First Academy-Orlando and sophomore Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island are the 2023 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Golf and Mr. Golf, respectively, in a vote of the state’s district golf chairmen.

Florida Atlantic High-Boca Raton coach Cherene Castillo and Fleming Island coach Bruce Cloud were named girls’ and boys’ Golf Coaches of the Year after leading their teams to state championships.

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This is the 32nd year of these awards honoring the state’s top athletes and coaches in all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.

Soccer

In seven games, the undefeated Gulliver Prep boys’ soccer team has outscored the opposition 21-1. In a win against Palmer Trinity, Raul Leyva had a hat trick (3 goals) for NSU University School, and American Heritage-Plantation goalkeeper Jacob Libson recorded two shutouts this week.
