Belen cross-country wins 27th region title. Dillard girls also win. Plus basketball and soccer
The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won its 21st consecutive regional championship to qualify for state.
The Region 4-3A meet was at South Fork High School in Stuart on Saturday morning in the warmest and most humid conditions of any of Belen’s races this season.
The win marks the 27th regional title for the school’s running program.
Belen recorded another perfect score with 15 points in a field of 16 teams. The Wolverines were led by senior Joshua Ruiz, who won the individual region title in 16 minutes 6 seconds. His teammates finished in the next five spots, with the top five closing within a second of each other. There were 109 runners.
Belen advances for a 51st consecutive season to the FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship on Friday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. The Wolverines vie for their seventh consecutive state title. The win would improve Belen’s own state record for most consecutive team titles.
After the state championships, Belen will travel via airplane to Cary, North Carolina to compete in the Nike Cross Regionals -- less than 48 hours after racing in Tallahassee.
On the girls’ side, Dillard won the region championship with 34 points, followed by runner-up Lourdes at 67.
In a photo finish, district runner-up Christiana Coleman of Dillard won the region title over district champ Ashley Fitzgerald of American Heritage-Plantation. There were 102 runners.
