South Dade’s Bartelt signs with Iowa State. Plus football, soccer, state golf, more signings

Standout wrestler Sawyer Bartelt of powerhouse South Dade is one of the most decorated wrestlers in South Florida history, and he will continue this incredible career in college, wrestling for NCAA Division I Iowa State.

Bartelt inked the deal on National Signing Day.

He is the real deal.

Bartelt, a senior and three-time Miami Herald Wrestler of the Year, is a three-time FHSAA state champion with a perfect 115-0 mark at South Dade where he’s wrestled since 9th grade. He wrestled at Doral Academy in 7th and 8th grade, placing fifth and second at states, respectively. For Doral, he went 80-15 against high school aged wrestlers. He then went to South Dade to wrestle for its multi-time state championship program and also play football.

In 2023, Bartelt won the U.S. Open and U.S. World Team Trials in Greco Roman wrestling. He competed in Pan Ams in Chile and earned a silver medal in Greco. Sawyer was also a World Team Member for the United States in Greco in the summer in Amman, Jordan but did not place. He represented the United States at the Pan Am Games in Argentina in 2022, winning gold medals in Freestyle and in Greco. He is a two-time champion at U.S. Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.

Bartelt’s father, Douglas, wrote via email: “He loves the international styles of wrestling and has had an outstanding experience traveling all over the world creating memories as he goes. Winning the U.S. Open and Fargo and making the World Team certainly puts the Olympics on the radar, but he has never really expressed [competing] in the Olympics. He is mainly focused on college and an engineering degree.”

Bartelt was initially contacted by more than 30 NCAA Division 1 programs. He narrowed that list to 10 schools and then five through the recruiting process. Those five programs: Arizona State, Iowa, Iowa State, University of North Carolina and Penn.

Bartelt took official visits to Iowa State, University of North Carolina and Penn. Scheduling visits was problematic; he went during bye weeks and after Thursday night football games.

Bartelt ultimately chose Iowa State with Coach Kevin Dresser.

His father, Douglas, noted: “Coach Dresser was the first to come on a home visit and was steadfast and true to us during the entire process. Sawyer loves the wrestling culture in Ames, Iowa and feels he can make an impact in the ISU lineup. He loved everything about ISU, especially their weight training program, campus lifestyle and outstanding coaching staff.”

Bartelt gives all his credit to his club coach, Humberto “Duck” Reyna, Jr., and his high school coach, Victor Balmaceda. He has wrestled for Coach Duck at Gladiator Wrestling since he was 5-years-old. Coach Duck has made a remarkable impact on his life and has traveled with them all over the United Sattes the past 13 years.

Bartelt is currently ranked No.2 nationally at 220-pounds and is ranked No.14 for the class of 2024 (in all weight classes).
