Region Golf
Miami Springs High School’s Gia Culler-Guerra was walking up the par-5 18th hole at Grand Palms Golf Club in Pembroke Pines on Monday afternoon and glanced over at the driving range.
Not sure exactly where she stood on the leaderboard, Culler-Guerra could see Alessandra Tabora of American Heritage (Plantation) hitting balls and staying loose.
“When I looked over and saw her warming up, I figured she was doing that for a reason, and that things were tight at the top,” said Culler-Guerra. “I never really want to know where I stand down the stretch and didn’t on this day. I just play my game and let the chips fall where they may when it’s over.”
Culler-Guerra actually had reached the par-5 in two and had a 20-foot putt for eagle. She didn’t know it, but it was a putt that would’ve won her individual medalist honors at the Region 4-2A tournament. She came up a little short, two-putted for a birdie and then learned coming off the green that, thanks to three birdies on the last five holes, had rallied to tie Tabora with a 1-under par 72.
When Tabora missed a short par putt on the first playoff hole, the par 5 first, Culler-Guerra, who was already in for par, was the Region 4-2A individual champion for the second consecutive year. It was a year ago that, playing for Mater Lakes Academy, she defeated another American Heritage golfer, Katherine Schaefer in a playoff at Plantation Preserve.
“I think the experience of having won it last year in a playoff really helped me out there [Monday],” said Culler-Guerra who transferred to Miami Springs over the summer and whose mother Caroline was a Miami Herald All-County golfer at Springs in the mid-90s. “I did well at states last year and am anxious to get back up there next week and see what I can do this time around.”
Culler-Guerra, who won her fifth consecutive district championship last week (four at Mater Lakes 7th thru 10th grade, and now one at Miami Springs) referred to next week’s state tournament at Mission Hills Golf Club in Howey-in-the-Hills where a year ago, she shot rounds of 74-74 to place sixth individually and was the only golfer from Miami-Dade County to medal.
Culler-Guerra played individually as Miami Springs does not field a girls’ golf team, but Tabora’s efforts helped the powerhouse Patriots win another regional title as they finished with a team score of 298, 26 shots ahead of their nearest pursuer, Jensen Beach which placed second at 324.
