Hialeah’ football team trailed 20-14 midway through the third quarter on Friday night.

But running back Ryan Mathis wasn’t about to let the T-Breds’ winning streak end.

Mathis led the comeback as he scored two 5-yard touchdowns, one late in the third quarter and the game-winner with 9:48 left, to lead Hialeah to a 26-20 win over Miami High in a GMAC Series contest at Milander Stadium.

Playoff-bound Hialeah (7-1) won its seventh consecutive game a week after securing its first district title in four years.

The biggest play of the game came just before Mathis’ first score. On fourth-and-five from the MHS 45, quarterback Travis Delaney dropped back and found Jermain Beersingh open deep for a 40-yard gain to the five. Delaney scored on the next play but the extra point was blocked, leaving the game tied at 20.

Hialeah (7-1) has already locked up a playoff berth by virtue of their District 15-4M championship and entered this past week as the No. 6 in Region 4-3M. Miami High (3-5) was all but eliminated from playoff contention as the Stings entered the week in the No. 10 spot, nearly 100 points behind No. 8 Doral Academy.
