True North wins first district title in volleyball. Plus more district champs and football

True North won its first district title in girls’ volleyball.

After dropping the first set, the Titans rallied to defeat Archbishop Carroll 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18.

Freshman Dayleen Valdes had 17 kills and a .343 hit percentage. Gaby Miriki, a junior, had nine kills and four blocks, and sophomore Bianca Gomez totaled 22 assists, eight digs and four aces.

True North (17-9), which has no seniors and just two juniors, defeated Colonial Christian in a 2A district semifinal. Archbishop Carroll (11-15) beat Westwood Christian to reach the finals.

More district champs

Divine Savior captured its 11th consecutive district volleyball championship and 11th title in 11 years as part of the FHSAA. The Sharks defeated JC Bermudez, Chaminade-Madonna and Doctor’s Charter in straight sets to win the title. Divine Savior (19-9) advances to the FHSAA Class 3A State Tournament Regional Quarterfinal.

Doral Academy (20-7) won its third consecutive district title, defeating Coral Gables in a 7A final 25-9, 25-20, 25-16. Ainhoa Molleja had 17 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces, and Melissa Gonzalez recorded 28 assists, 3 digs, 4 aces. Angie Vazquez added 18 digs, 2 aces.

In a 4A district championship, Gulliver Prep (24-3) rallied to defeat St.Brendan 17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-12. Jackie Taylor led with 20 kills. Julia Rose Rivera added 8 kills, and Maya Pace recorded 30 assists and 12 digs. Micaela Navarro had 4 blocks, and Sophia Wong totaled 16 digs and three aces. Hailey Brenner posted 11 digs and three aces, and Catalina Palazio had a match-high seven aces.

4A District Semifinal: St. Brendan d. Sunset 25-14, 25-12, 25-19: Ana Sofia Tobar 5 kills, 4 digs; Mia Ortiz 6 kills, 1 block; Jordan Medina 5 kills, 3 digs; Daniela Mayz 6 digs; Annelise Alvarez 3 kills, 3 aces; Isabela Quijano 5 blocks. StB (14-9).

Football

Archbishop Carroll football (7-1, 3-1 district) notched a big district win on the road with 504 rushing yards.

Archbishop Carroll 42, Westminster Christian 14: The Bulldogs were led by RB Sylus Villanueva (3 rushing TDs) and QB Ryan Castro (who led all rushers with 174 yards and threw just one pass, completing it to Ryan Gonzalez for a 15-yard TD). Alejandro Isaza and Gonzalez also scored rushing TDs.
