Somerset boys’ golf won Wolverine Classic. Douglas girls’ golf wins. Plus swimming, volleyball

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School hosted the 2023 Wolverine Golf Classic at PGA National on The Match Course in Palm Beach Gardens. The field consisted of 12 boys’ teams (72 players) and four girls’ teams (21 players).

In the boys division, Somerset Academy (Pembroke Pines) captured the team title with a 289. The Panthers were led by sophomore Gabriel Holtz (69). Gulf Coast High School (Naples) took runner-up honors at 291. They were led by senior Aidan Tipple (66), who was second overall.

Lorenzo Rodriguez, a junior at Belen Jesuit, won the individual title. He also shot 66 and then beat Tipple in a two-hole playoff

In the girls division, King’s Academy (West Palm Beach) was the team winner at 323. They were led by senior Leelou Girault (72), who finished first for the individual title. Doral Academy was runner-up at 325 with junior Mia Caraballo (76) leading the Firebirds.

Nicholas Prieto, the 2021 & 2022 Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Boys’ Golfer of the Year from Florida Christian, won his first collegiate golf tournament.

Prieto, representing Arizona State University, won the Oregon State University Invitational at the Trysting Tree Golf Club (7,384 yards, par 71) in Corvalis, Oregon. He carded a 68-70-71--209 to finish at 4-under.

GIRLS: Stoneman Douglas 169, Cardinal Gibbons 176 at Woodmont CC in Tamarac (Cypress One Course, par 36, 9 holes): Medalist Sutton Oosterhuis (SD) 34; Cassidy Charles (SD) 41; Fiona Manelas (CG) and Kate Mackie (CG) 42; Sofia Ehret (CG) 43; Sophie Alcala-Marks (SD) 44; Elizabeth Smith (CG) 49; Ella Thompson (SD) 50.

Volleyball

Doral Academy finished third at the Warrior Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Westminster Christian.

The Firebirds went 3-2 in the two-day event.
