Key turnover sparks American Heritage’s comeback victory over Western

American Heritage has an explosive and balanced offense, capable of wearing down opponents with its speedy receivers and power backs.

On Friday night, the Patriots also showed they have game-changing players on defense.

Cornerback Xavier Lucas swung the momentum late in the third quarter with a pick six that helped rally Heritage to a hard-fought, 28-14, road victory against Western.

“That’s what we’ve been waiting on all year, [those defenders] making the play,” Patriots coach Mike Smith said. “Make the play. Make the catch. We had the one against Chaminade that we dropped. We had a couple of other ones. Those guys made the big plays tonight. Every game is going to have its own story.”

Lucas, the senior who has committed to Wisconsin, actually gave the Patriots (4-1) the lead for good with a 25-yard interception return with 1:24 remaining in the third quarter.

At the time, the Wildcats (3-3) were in front 7-6 when quarterback and Virginia Tech commit Davi Belfort rolled out to his left, and made a throw on the run.

Lucas went airborne near the sidelines, attempting to at least swat the ball down. But in the air, he was able to collect the throw, and race 25 yards into the end zone.

Byron Louis’ 2-point conversion run gave the Patriots a 14-7 lead.

“I thought he was going to throw it over my head, so I tried to slap it down,” Lucas said. “He threw it right at my face, so I tried to grab it.”

The touchdown was Lucas’ second interception of the night.

On Western’s first drive of the third quarter, the Wildcats drove to the Patriots’ 42. Western attempted a deep pass that Lucas picked off at the 14.

A few weeks ago, in Heritage’s 28-16 loss Chaminade-Madonna, Heritage had a potential pick-six opportunity get batted down for an incompletion.

Heritage’s offense rolled last week in a 48-7 rout of Cardinal Gibbons. But on Friday it was a different story with Western scoring first on Belfort’s 48-yard touchdown pass to Koby Howard in the first quarter.

The Patriots chipped back with a couple of field goals from Gavin Harvey and trailed 7-6 at halftime.

“Last week we had an offensive explosion,” Smith said. “We struggled tonight offensively, but our defense bailed us out, and we got enough to get a tough road win.”

After Lucas’ pick six, Heritage’s defense stepped up again, with Rodarion Tellez recovering a fumble at the Wildcats’ 10. Louis scored on a 7-yard run with 10 seconds left in the third quarter, making it 21-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Western rallied and scored on Belfort’s 8-yard run, making it a one-score game with 10:53 remaining.

But Heritage’s offense came up big with Dia Bell hooking up with Deandre Desinor, the speedy back who caught the pass near the sidelines and dashed 47 yards for the score.

“Seeing the defense step up, so I already knew once we got back on the field, it was time for us to step up and make some plays,” Desinor said. “Seeing the receivers blocking their butts off, so I decided, I had to make one person miss.”
