True North football beats state champ, and Pine Crest wins Morrison golf. Plus more results

The True North football team recorded one of its biggest victories to date, beating FHSAA 2022 1S state champion First Baptist Academy 21-8 in Naples.

The Titans (5-0) remained undefeated. They were led by freshman Jonathon Bueno who had 22 carries for 173 yards and all 3 TDs. Quarterback Zach Katz had a 78-percent completion rate, throwing for 173 yards with 108 of those yards to Jasen (J-Roc) Lopez who caught 9 passes.

True North took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Bueno scored on a 3-yd run. First Baptist (2-2) went ahead 8-7 in the second quarter. With 8:31 remaining In the third quarter, the Titans took the lead for good, 14-8, on a Bueno 1-yd TD run. They added some breathing room with 2:48 left in the fourth quarter with another score by Bueno (this time from four yards).

Archbishop Carroll 49, Everglades Prep 0: The Bulldogs offense generated 388 yards. Ryan Castro, Alejandro Isaza and Sylus Villanueva combined for 5 rushing touchdowns. Castro also threw a touchdown pass to Isaza. The defense limited Everglades Prep to 43 yards. Safety Kenny Pembleton had two more interceptions to bring his season total to 7, and CB Ryan Gonzalez returned an interception for a touchdown. AC (4-1).

Golf

Pine Crest, led by sophomore Jonathan Weinberg, won the Morrison Golf Invitational at Fort Lauderdale Country Club.

The Panthers totaled 288, nine strokes better than Benjamin-Palm Beach Gardens. American Heritage-Plantation was third at 301.

The event is the oldest 18-hole high school golf tournament in Florida and honors the legacy of longtime Cardinal Gibbons golf coach Gene Morrison, a high school Hall of Famer.

Weinberg shot a winning 70 on the South course, covering 6,661 yards off the Champion Tees. Teammates Haoting Zhou and Jayden Freedman followed closely at 72 along with Columbus junior Victor Herrera and American Heritage-Plantation freshman Sohan Patel.

Volleyball

Gulliver Prep placed third at the C-M Cares Volleyball Invitational, hosted by Chaminade-Madonna in Hollywood and Archbishop McCarthy in Southwest Ranches.

Gulliver Prep went 4-1 in the two-day event. Julia Rose Rivera led the Raiders (14-2) en route to making the All Tournament team.

Undefeated Ferguson defeated rival Columbus 5-2 in boys’ bowling.

Falcons senior Joshua Muñoz had a high game 235 and high series 633. Sergio Alonso led Columbus with a high game of 256 and a high series of 654, tops of all bowlers. Teammate Carlo Toca added a high game of 228.

Ferguson junior Isaiah Lacayo had a high game of 215 and sophomores Daniel Rodriguez (high game 190) and Miguel Brito (high game 220) and freshman Lexander Perdomo (high game 222) also sparked the Falcons (8-0).
