Belen cross-country wins major event in Alabama. Plus bowling, football, golf, volleyball
The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team continued its streak with another dominant win; this time at the Southern Showcase Invitational in Huntsville, Alabama.
The invitational features many of the top teams in the southeastern United States, including No.3-ranked Jesuit of New Orleans.
In a battle of the two Jesuits, Belen Jesuit totaled 73 points, and runner-up Jesuit had 124 points.
The Wolverines averaged a 15:12 clocking, which now leads all team averages in the country and sets the record for the fastest team in state history.
Along with the major meet win, Belen’s Joshua Ruiz set a Florida 5K cross-country state record, covering the 3.1-mile course in 14 minutes 38.79 seconds. It is the fastest time in the country this season.
Not far behind was teammate and top U.S. freshman Marcelo Mantecon, running a freshman record time of 14:52.59.

Football
Archbishop Carroll football won an instant classic over Goleman at Milander Stadium in Hialeah. The game was continued after being suspended on Aug. 31 because of inclement weather.
Goleman went ahead 14-0 early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs then erupted with 28 unanswered points, all on the ground.
Carroll (2-1) rushed 58 times for 347 yards. They did not attempt a pass throughout the game. QB Ryan Castro led the way with 101 yards on 18 carries and 1 touchdown. Sylus Villanueva added 96 yards on 19 carries, and Alejandro Isaza had 2 rushing touchdowns.
Goleman (3-1) did not quit, storming back with two late touchdowns. Thus, after closing the gap to 28-26 in the fourth quarter, Goleman needed a two-point conversion to tie the game. The Bulldogs defense denied the Gators to clinch the victory.
Carroll FS Kenny Pembleton had two more interceptions, giving him five on the season, and he blocked one of Goleman’s extra points.
