Todd Rubinstein, the Alonzo & Tracy Mourning boys’ and girls’ tennis coach, received the 2022-23 National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Boys’ High School Tennis Coach of the Year Award, as well as being part of its next Hall of Fame class.

Rubinstein, who was the recipient of the 2018 USPTA National High School Coach of the Year award, started coaching in the 1997-98 season at Piper High School in Sunrise. After one year there, he coached at Goleman High in Miami-Dade County for 12 seasons and then transitioned to Mourning High the past nine seasons.

Rubinstein’s record is 506-149-2 in 22 seasons with 24 regional tournament appearances, five state appearances and two FHSAA state tennis championship teams. He is the only coach in Mourning High School history with not just one, but two state championships in any sport.

Rubinstein: “It’s all about giving the kids and their selfless families the most incredible experience they can possibly have by keeping them engaged, focused, and in the moment. My philosophy is family first and that it’s all about the team. The primary ideology, which I feel is paramount, is to create a positive, motivational and inspirational culture, and after that, everything else will come. It’s not just about working hard but to teach the players to compete and respect each other; so that it not only translates on the tennis court but in the classroom, in the community and in life. I can’t thank my players, their families and the school administration enough for putting their trust in me over the years, as I have been Blessed to have been a part of so many lives and to help create and develop our next leaders of tomorrow. I also can’t thank the NHSCA enough for this prestigious recognition, as I’m truly grateful and flattered to not only have been considered, but to have been honored.”

Rubinstein, a Coral Gables resident, was presented with his award recently at Mourning High School by Principal Christopher Shinn while surrounded by other administration and staff.

Rubinstein is a former high school tennis standout, as he won three FHSAA high school state championships as a player at Cooper City High School. He won two individual FHSAA state tennis championships in singles in 1987 and 1988 and also was part of a FHSAA state tennis championship team in 1988. He then played No.1 singles and No.1 doubles for Barry University in Miami Shores, where he was the first Sunshine State Conference first team tennis player in school history.
