Ransom Everglades volleyball won a Nike tournament. Belen cross-country continues to impress
The Ransom Everglades girls’ volleyball team won the Nike Tournament of Champions in Wesley Chapel.
The Raiders went 6-0, beating Lakeland 25-16, 25-16; Frederick Douglas (Kentucky) 25-10, 25-14; Winter Springs 25-16, 18-25, 15-8; Steinbrenner (Lutz) 25-16, 20-25, 15-12; Our Lady of Lourdes Academy 21-25, 25-20, 15-10; and Olympia (Boca Raton) 26-24, 25-21.
Top RE performers for the tournament: Julia Lewkowitz 74 kills, 38 digs, 6 aces; Mia Jean Claude 40 kills, 9 aces; Andrea Ortiz 31 kills, 37 digs, 9 aces; Addison Pollock 87 digs, 9 aces; Stephanie Wallen 118 assists. RE (9-0).
Note: During the tournament, Mia Gold recorded 68 kills, 4.1 kills/set, 35.9-percent-kill percentage, 46 digs, 5 aces, and 3 blocks for Pine Crest. Prior to the high school season, she was named All-American at AAU Nationals.

Belen cross-country
For a second consecutive weekend, the Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won a major invitational.
Besting a field of 38 teams, the Wolverines scored a meet-record 19 points at the 10th annual Horse Park Cross-Country Invitational in Ocala. In second place was Sunlake with 103 points. Columbus took third with 130 points and Braddock fourth with 160 points.
Belen’s top runner and individual race winner was senior Joshua Ruiz, who set a 5K course record in 15 minutes 24 seconds. Just a second behind Joshua was teammate Marcelo Mantecon in 15:25, further maintaining his position as the top freshman runner in the United States.
The team’s scoring five shuffled in order this week, including Joshua’s younger brother’s breakout performance. Justin Ruiz, a junior, was clocked at 15:38, fourth overall of 322 runners. Joshua’s twin brother, Joseph Ruiz, placed sixth overall in 15:47.80. In 54 years of cross-country at Belen, this is the first time three brothers are part of the team’s scoring five at a major invitational.
The consistent Evan Torres, a senior, rounding out the Wolverines’ top 5, finished eighth overall in 15:54.60.
Note: Nationally ranked and traditionally strong Belen is off this weekend as it prepares for its national meet debut at the Southern Showcase Invitational in Huntsville, Alabama, on Sept. 16.
More cross-country
Columbus senior Alejandro Romagosa was ninth overall at the Horse Park Cross-Country Invitational in 15:56.70, and Doral Academy senior Augustin Muyl Pineda was 17th in 16:20.30.
Columbus senior Mario Sueiras finished in the Top 20 in 20th at 16:23.30.
Braddock had two runners in the Top 30. Sophomore Mauricio Escalona was 25th at 16:29.30, and senior teammate Michael Gongora was 26th at 16:29.40.
In the girls’s race, Braddock was runner-up of 29 teams with 120 points. Only (Jacksonville) Bolles finished ahead of them with 97 points.
Braddock senior Annabella Cardona was third of 249 runners in 19:09.70. Teammate Kayla Feeney, a junior, made the Top 10, placing ninth in 19:44.30. Braddock senior Jada Garcia was 17th in 20:13.00.

The Carrollton girls’ golf team placed fourth at the Lady Maverick Invitational, hosted by Archbishop McCarthy, and then the Cyclones won their first match of the season.
In windy conditions at the Lady Maverick Invitational, Carrollton’s Fernanda Carrion tied for fourth overall with an 80. Against Gulliver Prep, she took medalist honors.
