Columbus golf in Arizona and Fort Lauderdale within days. Plus bowling, football, volleyball
The Columbus boys’ golf team had a busy few days, traveling cross country.
The Explorers flew to Arizona, competing in the Brophy Rodeo, one of the premier high school golf tournaments in the country.
The event featured teams from throughout the United States including Arizona, Texas, Utah, Hawaii, Florida, Nevada and Illinois.
Columbus, which finished 11th of 20 teams, was led by junior Hubert Ramirez (31st of 108 golfers) and freshman Hector Perez Sainz (42nd). Teammates Nicholas Shortal, Victor Herrera, Joe Fernandez, and Nick Rousseau also fared well to help the team.
Two days later, Columbus participated in another big tournament, the (Plantation) American Heritage Invitational at Lago Mar in Fort Lauderdale. The Explorers shot 307 to place third, behind champion (North Palm Beach) Benjamin (288) and runner-up American Heritage (298).
Hubert Ramirez, a junior who recorded six birdies to lead the Explorers at even par 72, finished fourth. Nick Shortal was 10th at 4-over 76, and Nick Rousseau shot 79, good for 20th.
