Columbus, NSU University School roll to wins, plus more Thursday scores

Senior quarterback Alberto Mendoza threw three touchdown passes and senior defensive back Cameron Pineda intercepted two passes to lead Columbus to a 38-0 rout of visiting Miami Killian on Thursday night on its home field.

The Explorers (2-0), the reigning Class 4M state champions who entered the week ranked No. 25 nationally by MaxPreps, won their eighth consecutive game and 16th in their past 17.

Columbus followed up its big road win over Clearwater Academy International last week by controlling the game from the outset. Mendoza threw touchdown passes to Tristan Pineda, Jose Leon and Rocco Bradley while Agyeman Addae and Antuwan Simmons each ran for a touchdown.

The Explorers will take on another state power next Friday when they travel to Tampa to face Jesuit High.

NSU University School 58, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest 14: The Sharks (2-0) scored 44 unanswered points from the second quarter onward to score the blowout win at DRV PNK Stadium on Thursday night.

University quarterback Jett Yurgealitis led the Sharks, throwing five touchdown passes and running for another.

Goleman 7, Archbishop Carroll 0 (susp. 1st): After waiting 45 minutes due to a pregame weather delay, Archbishop Carroll and Goleman were not able to play very long before the lightning detector went off again on Thursday evening at Millander Stadium.

It was long enough for the Gators to put a touchdown on the board when they went 65 yards in just seven plays on their opening drive. Quarterback Daniel Riveron found Ja’Montay Parks wide open over the middle for a 13-yard score. But the biggest play on the drive came two plays earlier when Riveron found sophomore sensation Darryl Bell for a 35-yard gain on third down setting the Gators up at the Carroll 14.

Bell plays both ways as a safety and wide receiver and already has FBS offers from Florida State, FAU, Louisville and Charlotte. The game will be resumed on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at Milander.

BILL DALEY

Booker T. 0, Edison 0 (susp. 1st): The game was halted with 9:45 left in the first quarter due to inclement weather. The teams agreed to resume play on Oct. 16 at Traz Powell Stadium.

Northwestern vs. Jackson, postponed: The Soul Bowl will be played Saturday at 6 p.m. at Traz.

Westland Hialeah vs. Mater Academy, postponed
