Season opening wins for area volleyball teams. Plus, bowling, football, golf, swimming, track
Carrollton, Doral Academy, Gulliver Prep, Pines Charter and Ransom Everglades are off to 2-0 starts in volleyball, and Archbishop McCarthy girls’ golf recorded a win against Cardinal Gibbons to open its season successfully.
Plus, consistently strong Ferguson bowling is starting on the right foot again at 1-0.

Bowling
Ferguson bowling is off to a good start for the 2023 season.
The girls’ team defeated Gulliver Prep 7-0 with high games from seniors Natalia Findeisen (145) and Madison Rivero (142) and the high series from Rivero (362).
The boys’ team beat Gulliver Prep 5-2 with high games from sophomores Dylan Jaramillo (199) and Miguel Brito (190) and freshman Lexander Perdomo (181). High series went to Jaramillo (535).
BOYS: Belen Jesuit 7, Keys Gate 0: Enrique Groso high game (200), high series (545).
Golf
Medalist honors in girls’ golf for Audrey Bacic of winning Archbishop McCarthy against Cardinal Gibbons. She shot 2-under par 34 at Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale.

Football
The Krop football team won its home opener against Miami High 28-14.
Trailing 8-0 at halftime, the Lightning scored on their first offensive play of the second half when senior RB Darence Pierre-Louis (125 total rushing yards) broke loose for a 50-yard TD run. Senior RB Ricky Joseph followed up with a 2-point conversion run to tie it the game at 8.
The Krop defense was steller throughout the game, forcing 3 turnovers and sacking the Miamo High QB 10 times.
Senior captain Khamari Griffin, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound DE, had 4 TFL with 2 sacks. Caleb Turner Allen, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound LB/EDGE, added 3.5 sacks, Standout LB Qwincy Bonne-Annee had 14 tackles with 4 TFL, 2 sacks and many big hits. DB Donovan Adras recorded his 2nd interception; he had one last week, too. Senior ATH Keymari Robiou was physical at safety with 8 tackles, 1 TFL and 2 PBU. Kalel Pascal totaled 15 tackles, 4 PBU, multiple impact hits and a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown which put the Lightning ahead for good.
Senior QB/ATH Jamaal Haggins scored on an incredible 50-yard TD run in the 4th quarter to seal the victory. Haggins finished with 205 total yards, 70 of those rushing.
The Lightning travel to play Southridge this week. Last season Southridge won 40-0.
Archbishop Carroll 42, Somerset Silver Palms 21: Archbishop Carroll gained 460 yards with 6 touchdowns. The Bulldogs ran the ball 45 times for 382 yards and 5 touchdowns. RB Alejandro Isaza picked up where he left off last year with 144 yards on 16 carries and 2 touchdowns. Ryan Gonzalez, Sylus Villanueva and Ryan Castro also scored. The defense was led by DE Kendrick Pembleton with 10 tackles and 3 sacks. AC (1-0), SSP (0-1).

Track
Jonathan Carter of the West Pembroke Pines Optimist Club track team qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa.
At AAU Junior Olympics, he competed in the boys’ 17-18 age group, placing 13th in the 400 hurdles in a personal best 55.09 seconds and 52nd in the 110 hurdles. Teammate Ronald Daniels was 48th in the 100 at 11.48 and 54th in the 200 at 23.31 in boys’ 15-16. Also in boys’ 15-16, Malcolm Spence of WPPOC was 40th in the 800 at 2:05.48 and 42nd in the 1,500 at 4:29.54.
