Locals win prestigious rowing and sailing titles. Plus preseason football, volleyball
Miami’s Enzo Menditto, a bowman, helped USA’s Team Petersen win the 56th annual Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship Regatta in Newport Beach, California.
Menditto, a sophomore at Georgetown University, is a Westminster Christian alum. He teamed with skipper Jeffrey Petersen, a junior at Georgetown, and Max Brennan, main and spinnaker trimmer, for the sailing victory.
Behind a near-perfect performance, USA’s Petersen/Menditto/Brennan swept Australia’s Team Cole Tapper in the best-of-5 finals.
Teams from a record eight countries sailed in the prestigious event with three teams representing the USA.
In a mostly drama-free regatta, Petersen’s team faced its first moment of pressure in the semifinals, when USA’s Team Callahan, led by Miami’s Justin Callahan (a sophomore at Harvard and LaSalle alum), evened up the best-of-5 semifinal at 1-1 in the last race of Friday’s action. It marked USA’s Team Petersen’s first defeat.
Team Petersen regrouped en route to victory in the semifinals and finals. Callahan and his team -- including twin brother Mitchell (a sophomore at Harvard and LaSalle alum), Liam O’Keefe (Brown University) and Danny Riano -- finished fourth.
USA’s Team Petersen -- with Menditto and Justin Callahan joining forces -- will compete Dec. 9-15 at Youth Matching Racing Worlds in Sydney, Australia.
