Mater Lakes Academy wins True North volleyball event. Plus Belen sports results and more
The Mater Lakes Academy boys’ volleyball team went 5-0 to win the True North Academy Titans Invitational.
In pool play, the Bears defeated Slam 25-7, 25-13; LaSalle 25-17, 25-15; and Varela 25-18, 25-23.
In the Gold Bracket semifinals, Mater Lakes beat Sunset 25-10, 25-16. In the finals, the Bears defeated Varela 25-15 25-19.
Bears senior outside hitter Jesus Montes (49 kills, 14 aces, 9 blocks) was named Tournament MVP. Teammates Nicholas Aranda (junior setter) with 81 assists, 21 digs, 5 aces and Kevin Llerena (junior outside hitter) with 28 kills, 25 digs, 5 aces made the All Tournament Team.
Also playing well for Mater Lakes Academy were sophomore libero Alejandro Graveran (22 digs, 7 assists), sophomore middle blocker Ibrahim Perez (10 kills, 8 blocks), and junior middle blocker Jonathan Falero (10 kills, 7 blocks).
Mater Lakes Academy remained unbeaten, improving to 9-0.
More boys’ volleyball
The Belen Jesuit boys’ volleyball team is also undefeated, improving to 10-0 with a victory over Downtown Doral. Prior, they beat Spanish River-Boca Raton.

Track & field
Belen Jesuit’s Tiago Socarras and Joshua Ruiz broke 24-year-old meet records, while posting wins at the Dade County Youth Fair Championship at Tropical Park in Miami.
Socarras won the 1600-meter race in a meet record 4 minutes 12.98 seconds, breaking Central’s Moises Joseph 4:15.98 mark set in 1999. He also won the 800 meters in 1:56.68.
Ruiz won the 3200 meters in a meet record 9:22.94, breaking Miami Springs’ Alien Bosmenier 9:26.61 mark, also set in 1999.
Socarras and Ruiz were also members of the winning 4x800 meter relay that ran 8:11.57 with Evan Torres and Marcelo Mantecon.
Soccer
North Broward Prep’s Leah Finkelman finished fifth in the voting for state Miss Soccer honors via the Florida Dairy Farmers as voted by coaches and media members.
Finkelman, the state’s Class 4A Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year, is also the Miami Herald’s Broward County Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year for Classes 4A-2A.
Florida’s Class 7A Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year Grace Ivey of 7A state champ Bartram Trail was voted Miss Soccer.
