Poll: Which Broward high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Feb. 26)

Broward County’s top athletes continue to impress as the winter sports of soccer and girls’ basketball reached their conclusions and boys’ basketball and wrestling decided regional champions. Meanwhile, multiple spring sports like baseball and softball are underway.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Broward County high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, March 2, around 10 p.m.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Nyla McFadden, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ basketball: McFadden totaled a combined 42 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Raiders to wins over Lakeland Lake Gibson and Punta Gorda Charlotte, securing their third consecutive state championship.

Jovani Solis, Somerset Academy, boys’ wrestling: Solis improved to 46-3 on the season and won the 113-pound championship to help the Panthers win the Region 4-1A title.

Juan Otero, American Heritage, boys’ soccer: Otero scored all three goals in the Patriots’ 3-1 comeback win over Naples to win the Class 5A state championship - the school’s eighth all-time and first since 2019.

Nick Koorse, North Broward Prep, baseball: Koorse went 4 for 7 with six RBI to lead the two-time defending state champion Eagles to wins over Delray American Heritage, Monsignor Pace and ABF Academy.

Maxinot Mondesir, Miramar, boys’ wrestling: Mondesir won the 220-pound championship at the Region 4-2A and was the Patriots’ lone individual champ as they placed fourth at the meet as a team.
