Poll: Which Broward high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Feb. 5)
Several of Broward County’s top athletes kept delivering clutch performances as the winter sports entered the playoffs.
This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Broward County high school sports.
Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Feb. 9, around 10 p.m.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:
▪ Samuel Vil, Cardinal Gibbons, boys’ basketball: Vil was named the tournament MVP of the BCAA Big 8 championship after leading the Chiefs to wins over Boyd Anderson, Pembroke Pines Charter and South Plantation to secure their first tournament title since 2014.
▪ Omarri Wallace, South Plantation, boys’ basketball: Wallace scored a combined 54 points in three games (two wins over St. Thomas Aquinas and Cypress Bay) and over 25 rebounds to lead the Paladins to their first BCAA Big 8 championship game.
▪ Taylor Smith, NSU University School, girls’ soccer: Smith scored a goal and had two assists in the Sharks’ 3-0 win over Pine Crest to clinch the District 13-3A championship.
▪ Riley Weiss, North Broward Prep, girls’ basketball: Weiss scored 30 points in a victory over Somerset Canyons to lead the Eagles to a district championship.
▪ Alexander Jimenez, Monarch, boys’ soccer: Jimenez recorded a shutout and made 14 saves to lead the Knights to a 2-0 win over Stoneman Douglas and the District 13-7A championship.
