Cypress Bay, Mater Lakes Academy, Miramar, South Dade ready for state. Plus more wrestling

The Mater Lakes Academy wrestling team is heading to the FHSAA Class 1A State Duals for the second consecutive season.

Surprising Miramar is making its first appearance at state duals in Class 2A.

Powerhouse South Dade and steady Cypress Bay will represent South Florida at state in Class 3A.

Mater Lakes Academy defeated host Key West 58-14 and Somerset Academy (Pembroke Pines) 34-29 at 1A regionals. By beating Somerset, the Bears avenged a 27-25 loss in the finals of district duals a week prior.

With two starters out, Mater Lakes Academy displayed amazing resilience at regionals.

Against Somerset, three seniors (Emmanuel Celestin at 145, Calogero Mazzrillo at 170, Emanuel Nazco at 182) led the way with clutch wins. Celestin recorded the pin of the match, avenging a loss to the same wrestler at district duals. He was losing to him again, before scoring the pin with a cradle off a blocked reversal attempt.

Somerset defeated Killian 78-6 to reach a region semifinal against Mater Lakes Academy.

At state on Friday in Kissimmee, the Bears wrestle defending 1A state champ Jensen Beach for the region title. The winner advances to Saturday’s state semifinal. The state finals are also Saturday.

All at Osceola High School.

Jensen Beach defeated Cardinal Gibbons 41-20 in a 1A region semifinal. The Chiefs eliminated Clewiston 66-12, and Jensen Beach did the same to Coral Springs Charter 73-6 to set-up the semifinal showdown.

In Class 2A, Miramar stepped up, after gradually improving the past couple seasons. The Patriots won district duals and two regional matches to qualify for state.

At regionals, Miramar beat Belen Jesuit 63-13 and then St. Thomas Aquinas 69-12 to advance to state. The Raiders defeated Mater Academy 36-34 to advance into a region semifinal against Miramar.

Prior, Miramar won the Battle in the Den Tournament at Mater Academy in Miami and went 6-3 at the Battle at the Bay Invitational at Cypress Bay in Weston.

The Patriots face Merritt Island on Friday with the winner nabbing the region title and reaching the state semifinals on Saturday.

Powerhouse South Dade has done it again. The top-ranked Bucs defeated Columbus 75-0 and No.2 ranked Southwest 58-16 at regional duals to reach state in Class 3A. Southwest beat Doral Academy 38-30 to face South Dade in a continued rivalry.

What a season so far for South Dade.

After the regional duals, the Bucs traveled to St. Cloud and won the Cousins-Milton Winter Memorial Invitational.

Luis Acevedo, Josh Aviles, EJ Solis, Misha Arbos, Gavin Balmeceda, Cordell White and Sawyer Bartelt won individual titles.

South Dade is 9-0 in dual meets. The Bucs won the Christmas Knockout Invitational, Cradle Cancer Invitational, District Duals, Regional Semifinal Duals and the Cousins-Milton Winter Memorial Invitational.

In another 3A regional duals semifinal, the Cypress Bay wrestling team defeated Western 70-12 to qualify for state. The Lightning battle South Dade in the region finals on Friday.

The Explorers defeated Krop 78-0, Park Vista 64-12 and Heritage 42-29 on day one and Southridge 52-15, Riverdale 36-29 and Boca Raton Olympic Heights 44-30 on day two. Also on day two, Columbus avenged an earlier season loss by beating Palmetto 38-30 in an exciting grudge match.

The Explorers (29-7) will host Jupiter on Friday, before leaving for a Saturday tournament at Naples High School, featuring mostly Florida west coast teams.
