FIU signee Jenkins leads Dade to comeback win over Broward in second annual All-Star game

Miami Central quarterback Keyone Jenkins picked up right where he and the Rockets left off.

A week after winning the school’s fourth consecutive state championship and ninth overall by beating one of Broward County’s best in Plantation American Heritage, Jenkins led a squad of Miami-Dade County’s best to victory.

Jenkins’ 5-yard touchdown pass into the back of the end zone to Central teammate Cataurus Hicks with no time remaining lifted the Dade (305) All-Stars to a last-second, 23-21 comeback win over Broward (954) in the second annual Battle for the Crib All-Star game Friday night at Ansin Sports Complex.

Jenkins, who signed with FIU on Wednesday at the start of the early signing period, threw two touchdown passes to Hicks in the game and clinched Dade its first win in the series and therefore the right to host next year’s event. Jenkins was named the game’s MVP.

The Broward All-Stars took a 21-17 lead early in the second half when Pompano Beach Blanche Ely quarterback Nah’Coy Daniels scored from three yards out on a keeper.

One of the biggest plays of the night belonged to Broward though when Monarch edge rusher Gavin Peacock sacked and stripped the ball from Jenkins just past midfield and Western’s Justin Tedim recovered. Tedim then lateraled back to Cardinal Gibbons’ Greg Otten, who scored a touchdown that gave Broward a 14-7 lead late in the second quarter.

Miami Norland running back Lemmie Faulk scored Dade’s other touchdown to tie the game at 14 before Central kicker James London connected on a field goal just before halftime to put Dade ahead 17-14.

The game featured strong rosters on both sides featuring some of the best from South Florida with multiple Power 5 conference recruits.

Frank Tucker, a recruiting analyst for Rivals.com and one of the event’s organizers, was happy to see the turnout not just from those players but from several others who have yet to sign with a college and had the chance to benefit from the exposure of playing in such an event.

“It’s awesome to have those kids involved in this game, but it’s even better to have some of the kids (who don’t have that scholarship yet) make those plays and put those big moments on film,” Tucker said. “There’s going to be so many positive outcomes from this game. Last year, we had a couple of kids who signed after this game and I feel like that will happen again this season.”
