South Florida HEAT swimmers set records at state. Plus basketball, football, golf, soccer
A pair of South Florida HEAT sophomores set individual state records while leading their teams to top finishes among local teams at the FHSAA Class 1A State Swimming and Diving Championships in Stuart.
Kaii Winkler broke the state record in the boys’ 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. Winkler swam 42.52 seconds in the 100 free and 1:34.18 in the 200 free.
On the girls’ side, Erika Pelaez also set two records winning the 100 butterfly in 52.12 seconds and later the 100 backstroke in 51.78. South Florida HEAT also won the 400-yard free relay in 3:24.30.
Jacksonville Bolles added more state team titles to its extensive collection as its boys won their 35th consecutive state title and their girls won their 32nd in a row.
South Florida HEAT’s boys finished a distant second with 182 points. South Florida HEAT’s girls led all South Florida teams with a fourth-place finish (190 points).
Also of note, Miami Country Day’s Dylan Smiley won the boys’ 100 butterfly, and the Pine Crest boys won the 200 free relay. Julia Podkoscielny, also of Pine Crest, won the girls’ 200 IM, and Cutler Bay’s Olivia Dinehart won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.60.

Golf
The Florida Junior Tour (FJT) is the premier championship series in the Southeast United States for junior golfers. Conducted by the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA), competitors in FJT events are regarded as the best junior golfers in the state.
The FSGA concluded its year long FJT season, and sophomores Lorenzo Rodriguez, who plays high school golf for Belen Jesuit, and Remi Barcardi, who plays high school golf for Palmer Trinity, were crowned the season-long points champions in their respective boys’ and girls’ 13-15 age division.
Their season highlights include:
Boys (13-15) - Lorenzo Rodriguez (Tied for 3rd at 68th Boys’ Junior, Top 3 at 5 FJTs throughout the season, 35 counting rounds and only 3 rounds at 79 or above, Member of the victorious South Team at the Junior Florida Cup, Qualified for the US Jr. Amateur (USGA), Qualified for Notah Begay National Championship.
Girls (13-15) - Remi Bacardi - (63rd Girls’ Junior Champion, Won Open at Indian Spring, Won Open at Grasslands (16-18), which again, didn’t count toward this list, but is nonetheless impressive as a 15 year old, 11 of her 21 rounds in FSGA tournaments in 2022 were under par.
Soccer
Unbeaten Lourdes won a big game versus St. Thomas Aquinas in girls’ soccer, and Cardinal Gibbons improved to 3-0 in boys’ soccer.
