Here’s a look at which South Florida teams made the playoffs and where they are seeded
No more “bracketology” required.
We now know who is going to the state high school football playoffs from Miami-Dade and Broward and how they are seeded as they begin their quests to bring home a state championship. The Florida High School Athletic Association revealed its brackets on Sunday morning during a live webcast on its YouTube channel.
Sites and times have yet to be officially announced but will be finalized by Monday.
Here’s a look at where every team from South Florida is slotted for the first round of the playoffs which begins this Thursday:
Region 4-4M
8. Miami High (4-6) at 1. Miami Columbus (9-1), 7, Friday: The Explorers are chasing their second state title and first since 2019. Miami High is in the playoffs for the first time since that year when it lost in the second round to Columbus.
5. West Broward (6-4) at 4. Miami Palmetto (5-5), 3, Friday, Tropical Park: West Broward is in the playoffs for the first time since 2018. Palmetto’s late season surge secured a top-4 seed.
7. Weston Cypress Bay (6-4) at 2. Davie Western (6-3), 7, Friday: Cypress Bay is in the postseason for the first time since 2011 when it finished state runner-up in a 53-50 heartbreaker against Apopka. Western vaulted to the No. 2 seed on the strength of a dominant performance in a 49-22 win over Plantation. The Wildcats beat the Lightning 36-20 during the regular season.
6. Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy (6-4) at 3. Doral Academy (6-4), 7, Friday: Somerset makes its second-ever playoff appearance and first since 2014. Doral will look to rebound from a tough loss to Miami Edison last week.
Region 3-4M
8. Jupiter (5-5) at 1. Palm Beach Central (9-1), 6:30, Monday: Palm Beach Central recently beat playoff-bound Miami Carol City 34-28.
5. Parkland Stoneman Douglas (7-3) at 4. Lantana Santaluces (8-2), 6:30, Monday: The Eagles are back in the playoffs for the second conseuctive season and take on a Santaluces team coached by former Champagnat Catholic head coach Hector Clavijo.
7. Boca Raton (6-4) at Coconut Creek Monarch (8-2), 7, Monday: It’s been a while for the Knights who make their first playoff appearance since 2014.
6. Wellington (6-4) at 3. Palm Beach Gardens (7-3), 6:30, Monday.
Region 4-3M
1. Homestead (8-2) at 8. North Miami (5-5), 2, Saturday, Traz Powell: In a bracketing quirk, the lowest seed in the region will host the highest because North Miami won its district and Homestead did not. The Pioneers are in for the first time since 2018 while the Broncos are coming off a regional finals appearance.
4. Miami Belen Jesuit (5-5) at 5. Miami Dr. Krop (6-4), 6, Friday, Monsignor Pace: The Wolverines are away from home thanks to another lower-seed being a district champion. The Lightning enter the playoffs on a four-game win streak which secured the District 13-3M title.
7. Pembroke Pines Charter (6-3) at 2. Miramar (8-1), 7:30, Friday: Pines Charter’s late-season push earned it a berth for the first time in a decade while Miramar, a former state champion, has played its best football of the season in recent weeks.
6. Hollywood South Broward (5-4) at 3. Miami Southridge (6-4), 3, Saturday: South Broward is in for the second consecutive season and face a Southridge squad that won its first district title in four seasons.
Region 3-3M
8. Coconut Creek (6-4) at 1. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (9-0), 7:30, Friday: Creek’s loss to Palmetto to end the season dropped it into this difficult tilt against Aquinas, which is seeking its state-record 14th state championship.
5. Plantation (7-3) at 4. Delray Beach Atlantic (7-3), 6:30, Monday: The Colonels lost out on a home game after a lopsided loss to Western last week and must regroup.
7. Fort Lauderdale (6-4) at 2. Fort Lauderdale Dillard (6-3), 5, Friday: This is a rematch of last year’s opening round game which Dillard won 42-0.
6. Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer (7-3) at 3. Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (8-0), 7, Monday: A turnaround season for Blanche Ely meant a return to the playoffs after a three-year absence.
Region 3-2M
8. Riviera Beach Inlet Grove (7-2) at 1. Plantation American Heritage (9-1), 7:30, Monday: The Patriots’ quest for a sixth state title begins.
4. West Palm Beach Kings Academy (8-2) at 5. Boynton Beach (8-2), 7:30, Monday.
7. Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest (8-2) at 2. Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (9-1), 7:30, Friday: Gibbons is seeking its third consecutive state crown and fourth in five years. Gibbons beat Pine Crest, which makes its second playoff appearance in a row, 42-0 in the second round last year.
6. Boca Raton St. Andrews (7-3) at 3. Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian (8-2), 7, Friday: The Eagles made it for the fifth year in a row and hope to have a longer stay this time.
Region 4-2M
8. Miami St. Brendan (7-3) at 1. Miami Central (9-0), 7:30, Friday, Traz Powell: The Rockets are vying for their second run of four consecutive state championships. Playoff newcomer St. Brendan won its first district title this season.
5. Pinecrest Gulliver Prep (5-4) vs. 4. Miami Northwestern (5-4), 6, Saturday, Traz Powell: The Bulls have had an up and down year, but are positioned for a possible second round rematch with Central. Gulliver is chasing its second-ever state title.
7. Miami Carol City (5-5) at 2. Miami Booker T. Washington (9-1), 7, Thursday, Traz Powell: The Chiefs’ comeback season under coach Dorrean James features their first postseason berth since 2019. Booker T. is back with coach Tim “Ice” Harris at the helm and chasing its seventh state title.
6. Miami Jackson (7-3) vs. 3. Miami Norland (7-2), 3:30, Friday, Traz Powell: The Generals late season surge earned it a playoff berth in one of the state’s toughest regions. The Vikings haven’t looked this good probably since Duke Johnson was in their backfield.
Region 4-1M
4. Miami Palmer Trinity (5-5) at 1. Miami Archbishop Carroll (9-1), 3, Friday, Nov. 18: The Bulldogs are playoff-bound for the first time since 2008. Palmer Trinity is in for only the third time ever and first since 2018.
2. Miami Westminster Christian (7-2) at 3. Miami True North Academy (7-3), 7, Thursday, Nov. 17, Tropical Park: True North hosts by virtue of winning District 7-1M and makes its second consecutive playoff appearance. Westminster is back after a three-year absence.
Region 3-1M
4. Hollywood Avant Garde Academy (6-3) at 1. Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (9-0), 7:30, Friday, Nov. 18: The Lions begin their bid to match a state record with seven consecutive trips to the state finals and perhaps win their seventh championship all-time.
3. Palm Beach Gardens Benjamin (5-4) at 2. West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (10-0), 7:30, Friday, Nov. 18: Newman is a top-10 team overall in the state and potentially the biggest obstacle for Chaminade.
