Cross-country success for Columbus, Heritage, Ransom, St. Brendan, West Broward. Plus more results

Two of the top runners in South Florida secured individual championships at one of the first major meets of the cross-country season when juniors Ashley Fitzgerald from Plantation-American Heritage and David Serra from Miami-Ransom Everglades each finished first at the King of the Hill Invitational at Tropical Park in Miami.

Columbus cruised to the team title on the boys’ side with 27 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Mater Lakes (105 points). St. Brendan’s girls, led by individual runner-up Emma Hencock, secured the team title with 42 points to edge runner-up Lourdes (58 points).

Serra paced the boys’ field with a time of 16:16.19. Fitzgerald, who is coming off a state runner-up finish last season, crossed the finish line first although her official time was not available.

In volleyball, big win for St. Brendan over Doral Academy, and Colonial Christian, Riviera Prep and Divine Savior remain undefeated.

More cross country

The West Broward boys’ cross-country team finished first of eight teams at the first meet of the season at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach.

The field included Cardinal Gibbons, Coconut Creek, Coral Springs Charter, Deerfield Beach, Dillard, Piper, South Broward.

Leading West Broward on the 3.1-mile course were Carson Tolbert (17:42), Steven Sawyer (17:47), Ashton Sarrion (18:39), Kariff Meza (20:13) and Isaac Maldonado (21:44).

The West Broward girls’ team placed fourth in the girls’ division.

Kayla Barrios (24:45), Katelyn Parreno 25:03, Loralai Lambert 26:52, Mariana DeJesus 27:41 and Ana Bula 29:35 paced the Bobcats.

West Broward is coached by Ben Hodgers.

Volleyball

Brito 25-8, 25-7, 25-3: Michelle Loynaz 4 kills, 18 service points, 17 aces, 5 assists; Caitlyn Campbell 3 kills, 10 service points, 8 aces, 4 assists; Aliana Long 2 kills, 10 service points, 9 aces, 5 serve receptions; Emily Friman 11 service points, 5 aces, 5 serve receptions. BOYS: Miami Beach 222, St. Brendan 232 at Miami Beach Golf Club: Brian Cancino (StB) 46.

Football

Archbishop Carroll 21, Goleman 18: Kenny Pembleton blocked two extra points, had five tackles, an interception and a forced fumble to lead the Bulldogs to an upset victory. Quarterback Ryan Castro was 10-of-12 passing for 118 yards and a touchdown. Castro also ran the ball 7 times for 38 yards and a touchdown. Castro has 5 combined touchdowns in two games. Defensive End Brandon Miranda totaled 6 tackles and 2 sacks. AC (2-0).

Ransom Everglades 34, St. Brendan 14: RE: Senior QB Jackson Pegg threw 5 TD passes and ran for another. The defense held St. Brendan to 3-of-11 (27-percent) on third down conversions and set up its offense with great field position throughout the game. St. Brendan was averaging 38.5 points per game. The defense, which allowed just 80 passing yards, was led by linebackers Michael Kaye and Jordan Gonzalez. The offense, which eclipsed 400 yards, was led by Pegg (14-of-22 passing for 252 yards and 5 TDs to five different players - Gabe Alencar, Brendan Dyke, Juan Velazco, AJ Srebnick, Ryan Beinstock). RE (1-0).
