Results are in. Voters tab North Broward Prep pitcher as Broward Spring Athlete of the Year
Yoel Tejeda Jr. was one of Broward County’s most consistent two-way players both on the mound and at the plate as the ace of the North Broward Prep Eagles’ baseball team.
After leading the Eagles to their second consecutive state championship in late May, Tejeda Jr. adds one more honor to his growing list of accolades.
Miami Herald readers voted Tejeda Jr. as the Miami Herald’s Spring Athlete of the Year for Broward County.
Tejeda Jr., a University of Florida signee and potential early-round pick in this July’s Major League Baseball draft, finished his season with a 1.82 ERA and 90 strikeouts over 61 2/3 innings.
One of his highlights was throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings with eight strikeouts in North Broward Prep’s 1-0 state semifinal win over Cardinal Newman.
Tejeda Jr., a 6-7 righty, has often drawn comparisons to Randy Johnson for his tall, slender frame on the mound.
While improving his slider and changeup to go with a low-90s fastball, Tejeda Jr. posted a .360 batting average with four home runs, 30 RBI and 27 runs scored this season.
“Ever since last year,” Tejeda said last month. “I knew it was time to start developing my stuff and my mechanics.”
The poll included all 22 players from Broward County who were named player of the year by the Miami Herald for the spring season. Tejeda Jr. received 73 percent of the vote, with Stoneman Douglas baseball’s Jake Clemente (12 percent), and Roman Anthony (3 percent) following in the top three.
The Miami Herald has selected its overall Athletes of the Year and will reveal those winners this week. The results from this poll will not have a bearing on those selections.
