Monarch softball beats Douglas in regionals. Plus SLAM and more softball and baseball regionals
Sarah Phipps, a junior, went 3-4 with a double, a home run, a run and four RBI to help lead Monarch softball over host Stoneman Douglas 7-3 in a 7A region quarterfinal.
The Eagles (16-8) scored three in the first for a 3-0 lead. Monarch answered with five in the second. The Knights (14-10-1) added two insurance runs in the fifth en route to the upset.
This was a rematch of the district finals, which Douglas won 2-1.
Cooper City (6A), Coral Springs Charter (3A), Doral Academy (6A), Key West (4A) and Somerset Academy-Silver Palms (3A) led a group of area teams with easy wins in region quarterfinals.
Doral Academy pitcher Alyssa Zabala struck out nine of nine batters faced in a 3-inning, no-hit win over Nova.
In close battles, Fort Lauderdale (6A) eliminated St. Thomas Aquinas 2-1, and Westminster Christian (3A) eliminated American Heritage-Delray Beach 4-3.

Baseball playoffs
REGION SEMIFINALS
Starting pitcher Ethan Perez went the distance for the win as the Westminster Christian baseball team defeated visiting Florida Christian 7-2 in a Class 3A region semifinal.
Perez, a senior, allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and one walk while striking out two.
Trailing 1-0, the Warriors scored four in the second.
Westminster Christian (20-7-1) will host North Broward Prep (20-9) on Tuesday for the region title.
North Broward Prep defeated visiting Gulliver Prep 8-2 in a region semifinal. The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead. Leading 5-2, they plated three more in the sixth.
Gulliver Prep ended the season 17-10. Florida Christian finished 17-12.

Derek Arrocha pitched three shutout innings to help Miami Christian beat visiting Westminster Academy 5-3 in a 2A region semifinal.
Trailing 2-0, Miami Christian scored once in the third and rallied with three more in the fourth. Ahead 4-2, the Victors added an insurance run in the fifth.
Miami Christian (26-3) will host Trinity Christian Academy-Lake Worth (15-6-1) on Tuesday for the region title. Trinity Christian beat host John Carroll-Fort Pierce 11-5 to reach the region finals.
Westminster Academy ended its season 18-10.
