South Broward volleyball wins districts. Plus more volleyball, top hoop honors & other results
The South Broward boys’ volleyball team won a District 22 championship with an exciting, five-set victory over Chaminade-Madonna.
The champs are Jadon Bredwood, Rafael Angarita, Dagoney Stoudt, Jonathan Hardaway, Colton Bueter, Kimani Fearon, Sebastian Ochoa, Christian Thorne, Luka Crawford, Ben Aguerre, Thomas Neuberger, Diego Reese Nunez, Kristopher Arroyo, Jesper Paldino, Demarian Lane, Cameron Thorne, and Malik Tall.
The head coach is Leo Jimenez, and the assistant coach is Marc Vargas.
In a District 22 semifinal, Chaminade-Madonna defeated Hollywood Hills 25-16, 25-14, 25-14.

In District 21 semifinals, St. Thomas Aquinas (5-11) upset top seed Western (11-7) in five sets (25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12), and third seed American Heritage-Plantation defeated second seed South Plantation.

Lacrosse
The Pine Crest girls’ lacrosse team edged North Palm Beach-Benjamin 13-11 in a 1A region semifinal.
The Panthers led 7-4 at halftime and weathered Benjamin’s comeback efforts in the second half.
Pine Crest (18-3) advances to the region final on Saturday, traveling to defending state champ American Heritage-Delray Beach (16-2).
GIRLS: 1A Region Semifinal: Pine Crest 13, North Palm Beach-Benjamin 11: Lily Spyredes 5 goals; Kyra Servoss 3 goals; Alexa Cepero 2 goals; Lilli Forman 1 goal, 5 assists; Ella Bishara 1 goal, 2 assists; Alexandra Gladding 1 goal, 1 assist; Briann Spatz 7 saves, 11 goals against; 0.61 save percentage.
In a girls’ region quarterfinal, Pine Crest beat American Heritage-Plantation 17-5.
In other girls’ region quarterfinals, American Heritage-Delray Beach beat Calvary Christian 23-7, and Stuart-South Fork defeated Key West 8-6.
BOYS: 1A Region Semifinal: West Palm Beach-Oxbridge Academy 13, Belen Jesuit 1: The Wolverines ended the season 12-5.
BOYS: 1A Region Semifinal: Boca Raton-St. Andrew’s 14, Pine Crest 6. St. Andrew’s is the defending state champion. The Panthers finished the season 15-5.
CLASS 2A
In a 2A region semifinal, the St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ lacrosse team shut out Western 23-0. The Wildcats closed the season 14-6.
The Raiders (13-3) won the state championship last season and were state runners-up in 2017. They host Boca Raton (19-2) for the region title.
In another girls’ 2A region semifinal, Boca Raton edged Stoneman Douglas 10-9. The Eagles finished the season 10-7.
In girls’ 2A region quarterfinals, Stoneman Douglas beat Palm Beach Central 18-13. Western defeated Cypress Bay 10-3, and St. Thomas Aquinas shut out Palmetto 22-0.
On the boys’ side in 2A region semifinals, St. Thomas Aquinas beat Western 16-5, and Jupiter beat Columbus 10-5. Western ended the season 12-9. Columbus finished the season 14-6.
The Raiders (14-3) host defending state champ Jupiter (13-8) for the region championship on Saturday. St. Thomas Aquinas won state in 2016 and 2017 and was runner-up in 2015 and 2019.
Softball
Braddock softball celebrated Senior Day, honoring its senior players before a 17-2 victory over Varela.
The seniors are Nat Suarez, Juliette Avila, Daniela Pavon and Maylin Bosch.
Against Varela, Pavon was the winning pitcher, striking out five. Avila and Suarez added hits. Braddock is 9-8-1.

Basketball Honors
Fort Lauderdale Stranahan’s Houston Culpepper earned first team Class 5A All-State Boys’ Basketball honors, released by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) and Source Hoops.
Culpepper averaged a double-double (10.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game) while leading the Dragons to a state championship.
Miami Norland’s Marcus Allen earned second team honors, and Culpepper’s teammate Hykeem Williams secured a spot on third team.
In Class 4A, Calvary Christian had two of its top players make first team. LSU commit Marvel Allen (13.8 points per game) and UCF signee Taylor Hendricks (15 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.9 blocks per game) each garnered the honors after leading the Eagles to a state championship.
Their teammate Gregg Glenn earned second team honors as did North Broward Prep’s Justin Abson. Mater Lakes sophomore Christian Reid made third team.
