Western baseball wins 17th. No-hitter for Miami Beach. Perfect Game for Doral & tennis results
The Western baseball team improved to 17-3 with a 13-3 victory over Pompano Beach.
Winning pitcher Jake Butter is now 9-1. He received offensive support from Sean Kaelber, who was 3-for-4 with a double, 2 runs and 4 RBI, and Kristian Noriega, who went 4-for-5 with 2 runs, 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases.
Enrique Sierra added to the output. He was 2-for-2 with 2 doubles, a walk, 2 runs and an RBI. Tyle Jenkins was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI, and Mason Blocker went 2-for-2 and scored.
Pompano pitcher Charlie Tecza is 3-3.
More baseball
Miami Beach celebrated a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Mourning.
Junior right-hander Alex Allocco went the distance, striking out 12 in seven innings to highlight the no-no.
Sophomore centerfielder Jacob Gaynor saved the no-hitter by chasing down/catching a hard hit shot to the warning track.
On offense, Allocco helped his cause with a hit. Cedrick Jenkins, Jonathan Gaynor and Alessandro Villegas also added hits for the Hi-Tides (9-7).
Nolan Santos, a starting pitcher for Bethune Cookman, recorded the last Miami Beach no-hitter a few years ago against Coral Gables.
Nolan’s father, Jerry, is the Miami Beach pitching coach. Head coach Charlie Garcia did double duties as pitching coach, too, for the game against Mourning as Jerry went to watch Bethune Cookman play the University of Miami in Coral Gables.
Doral Academy baseball won two more with the latest a perfect game no-hitter against True North.
Pitchers Luis Rodriguez, Rance Suarez, Pedro Acosta and Keyler Gonzalez combined on the perfect game.

Tennis Regional Semifinals
In Class 1A boys, David Posnack Hebrew Day School edged Oxbridge Academy-West Palm Beach 4-3 to reach the region final. That’s the good news. The not so good news is the Rams next play tennis power St. Andrew’s-Boca Raton.
In Class 2A, in a battle of American Heritage teams, the Delray Beach version beat the Plantation version in boys and girls. The girls match was close, 4-3. Pine Crest is next for both American Heritage-Delray teams.
In Class 3A, Pembroke Pines Charter boys beat Belen Jesuit 4-2, and in Class 4A, Douglas boys beat Cooper City 4-2.
True North in 1A, Pine Crest and Gulliver Prep in 2A and TERRA in 3A celebrated both its boys’ and girls’ teams winning. In 4A, it was a sweep with boys’ and girls’ teams from Cypress Bay, Doral Academy, Douglas, and Palmetto moving on.
In these regional semifinals, some district runners-up defeated district champs to advance to the region finals.
MAST boys beat Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines 4-3 in 2A. LaSalle girls beat Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines in 2A. Ransom Everglades boys beat Miami Country Day in 1A. Oxbridge Academy-West Palm Beach girls beat Westminster Academy, and True North girls beat Divine Savior in 1A.

Golf
Luke Clanton, a senior from American Heritage-Plantation, was selected as one of the recipients of the prestigious Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award.
Clanton, a four-time Miami Herald All-Broward Boys’ Golfer of the Year and the 2021 Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2A Boys’ Golfer of the Year, won a state title for the third time in his stellar high school career.
In the process, he helped the Patriots win the state title last season, after three runner-up finishes.
This award not only recognizes his golf efforts in high school and the junior golf circuit but also his efforts in the classroom, how he presents himself in the community and the character he exhibits in his everyday life.
Wrestling
Douglas wrestler David Leiva won the Pan Am Judo Championship at 50 kg (110 pounds) in Lima Peru.
During the high school season, Leiva (25-5) was a district champion at 106 pounds. The freshman went 2-2 at regionals, tying for fifth.
Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines alum Juan Vernaza of Miramar was named National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-American. Vernaza wrestles for Southern Maine in Gorham, Maine.
A four-year member of the Huskies’ program, Vernaza is now a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American, previously earning the honor following the 2021-2022 season. A two-time NEWA honorable mention selection (2019-20, 2021-22), Vernaza completed his senior season, reaching the 20-win mark with a 20-10 record. At the 2022 NCAA regional championship, Vernaza recorded two wins. An Exercise Science major, three of Vernaza’s wins during the season were by fall, while one was by technical fall.
Vernaza is one of 451 individuals honored by the NWCA, representing 90 institutions.
To be eligible for the academic honor, nominees must have at least a 3.2 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
The student-athlete must also meet at least one of the following wrestling criteria: 1) be an NCAA qualifier with a winning record; 2) be a Regional place-winner (top 8) with a winning record and appear in at least half of the team’s scheduled events and 3) have won at least 2/3 of matches and appeared in at least half of a team’s scheduled events.
Volleyball All-Star Nominees
The Miami Dade Boys’ Volleyball All Star Game is May 19 at 6 p.m. at Miami High.
The North is districts 24-28, and the South is districts 29-32
Each coach can nominate 1-2 players; if you have more, you can nominate more. Include player’s name, position and statistics. Nominations are due the week of districts.
