Big district tennis day for Gulliver Prep, Riviera Prep, True North and more
The Gulliver Prep girls’ and boys’ tennis teams swept the District 16-2A Tournament.
The champion Raiders girls, coached by Kelly Mulligan, finished ahead of runner-up LaSalle 19-15 for the team title, and the champion boys, coached by Fernando Mateu, edged MAST Academy 17-16.

The top two teams advance to the region semifinals on Tuesday with Gulliver Prep boys against District 15-2A runner-up Mourning, and MAST versus District 15-2A champ Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines. In girls, Gulliver Prep hosts District 15-2A runner-up Mourning, and LaSalle faces District 15-2A champ Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines.
The No.1 singles and No.1 doubles district champions already qualify for state.

Class 1A Tennis
True North Classical Academy tennis also did very well. The boys’ team won the District 16-1A title, edging Ransom Everglades 18-17. The girls were runners-up to Riviera Prep. All four teams qualified for regionals.
As for state, junior Dylan Chang of True North won the No.1 boys’ singles title 6-1, 6-1 to already reach state. He also teamed with sophomore Brennon Chow to advance to state by winning the No.1 doubles title, 6-1, 6-1.
Key to winning the district team title, True North’s No.2 doubles tandem (8th graders Caleb Chow and Zander Guevara) came from behind to clinch the team championship. They dropped the first set 6-3 but rallied to win set two 6-4. In the tiebreaker, they trailed 6-1, before going on a 9-0 run, winning the deciding set 10-6.
True North includes No.1 Dylan Chang, No.2 Brennon Chow, No.3 Caleb Chow, No.4 Gabriel Valdes, No.5 Zander Guevara, Coach Ricky Guevara. Caleb Chow also won districts at No.3 singles.
True North will host District 15-1A runner-up Cushman in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, and Ransom Everglades will travel to District 15-1A champ Miami Country Day.
Riviera Prep won the girls’ team title, finishing five points ahead of True North, 19-14.
Palmer Trinity senior Francesca Salvato qualified for state at No.1 sinlges by beating Riviera Prep’s Sasha Kilgour 6-1, 6-1 in the district championship match. Salvato signed to play tennis at College of Charleston in South Carolina.
Kilgour teamed with Milagros “Mili” Lardiez to win at No.1 doubles 6-2, 6-2, and they advanced to state, too.
Also for district champion Riviera Prep, Lardiez won at No.2 singles. Leyla Kilgour won at No.3 singles. Isabella Paradisi won at No.5 singles, and Leyla Kilgour/Maria De La O won at No.2 doubles.
True North includes No.1 Daniela Chica, No.2 Stephanie Hilton, No.3 Maria Antonina, No.4 Yarlin Mendoza, No.5 Catalina Chow, Coach Andre Chow. Mendoza won districts at No.4 singles.
The Titans will visit District 15-1A champ Divine Savior in a regional semifinal on Wednesday, and Riviera Prep, coached by Mark Elman and Jane Forman, will host District 15-1A runner-up Miami Country Day on Tuesday.
Class 4A Tennis
Doral Academy tennis continued its history of dominance. The Firebirds won District 15-4A titles in boys’ and girls’ divisions.
Dr. Krop took runner-up honors in each. All four teams advance to the 4A regional semifinals on Tuesday.
In District 14-4A boys, Cypress Bay won the team title, and Cooper City placed second. In District 13-4A boys, Douglas was the champion and Deerfield Beach second.
In 4A regional semifinals on Tuesday, Douglas hosts Cooper City, and Deerfield Beach travels to Cypress Bay.
In District 14-4A girls, Cypress Bay is the team champion and Western the runner-up with both advancing to region semifinals.
Lacrosse
Nicky Denaro scored the winner in double overtime off an assist from Ryan Bienstock as the Ransom Everglades boys’ team beat Westminster Christian in double overtime in the post-season.

Baseball
Noel Leon became the first player in Riviera Prep school history to hit for cycle. Noel tripled in the fourth inning, homered in the fifth, doubled in the sixth and singled in his final at-bat in the seventh as the Bulldogs defeated Miami High 15-6.
