Sailing
The LaSalle sailing team won the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) Fleet Racing District Championship, qualifying for nationals.
The team’s goal is to bring home LaSalle’s first national championship, when it competes at Fleet Racing Nationals in San Diego on June 4-5.
The top seven teams from SAISA North and the top seven teams from SAISA South plus the top U.S. Virgin Islands team competed in districts at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg.
The SAISA district covers high schools from North Carolina to the Caribbean.
LaSalle finished the regatta with just 78 total points, a 35-point lead over runner-up Ransom Everglades.
Ransom Everglades and third place St. Thomas Aquinas also qualified for nationals.
The talk of the event was the performance of LaSalle’s B-division which dominated the regatta winning 10 of 12 races with two second place finishes (only 14 total points). Amazing.
This consistency at the highest level of competition is unprecedented. The boat was skippered by Justin Callahan (senior) with crew Danny Riano (junior).
The team’s A skipper was Mitchell Callahan (senior) with Caroline Caudron (junior) and Brianna Ross (senior) as crew. This victory was a true team effort with key support from Jadin Gonzalez, Holland Ramos, and Umi Noritake.
LaSalle’s sailors compete at the SAISA Team Racing Championship on May 7-8 in Charleston, South Carolina. A successful outcome there will qualify the team for the Team Racing Nationals as well in Houston on May 21-22.
