Edison flag football wins GMAC again. Big victories for Krop softball, Western baseball & more

The Miami Edison girls’ flag football team won the GMAC Championship for the second consecutive year.

Edison defeated American High 34-0. Then the Red Raiders beat Krop 13-0 in the semifinals. In the finals, they defeated Miami High 38-0, improving to 7-0.

The champs are Felicia Wright, Alexandra Harris, Shamese Lee, Channel Norris, Keisha Voltaire, Sarly Joseph, Kaliya Charles, Lonesha Howell, Joann Gilmore, Jahzara Silvera, Camille Canidate, and Daisy Lacayo.

The coaches are Vincent Hall, Kendedrick Simmons, Mikey Sheehan, John Burks, and Tarrence Fisher.

The Elite Eight of Miami Dade County teams under the GMAC banner also featured Ferguson, Northwestern, Southridge, and TERRA.

For the season, Edison QB Lonesha Howell has thrown 27 touchdown passes, so far.

More flag football

In a battle of unbeatens, Southridge defeated Ferguson 2-0 on a safety in the fourth quarter with Queentasia Mills on the rush.

Southridge 2, Ferguson 0: Mahogany Cochran 5 catches for 58 yards, 2 flag pulls, 11 passing yards; Queentasia Mills 6 catches for 37 yards, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT; Maliah Anglin 1 INT, 1 TFL, 1 flag pull. SRD (4-0), FERG (4-1).

Water polo

The Gulliver Prep girls’ and boys’ water polo teams won their region quarterfinal match-ups. Both teams advance to the region semifinals on April 8, hosting Miami Country Day.

GIRLS: Region Quarterfinals: Gulliver Prep 20, Cutler Bay 2: Gaby Montalvo 6 goals, 3 steals, 1 assist; Giorgia Pascual 3 goals, 1 steal, 3 assists; Kathleen Serig 2 goals, 2 assists; Goalie Margaret Miao 2 goals, 2 steals, 2 blocks. GP (14-8).

BOYS: Region Quarterfinals: Gulliver Prep 17, Columbus 7: GP: Daniel Preston 6 goals, 5 steals, 3 assists; Harry Sharma 6 goals, 3 steals; Gabe Lewis 2 goals, 4 steals, 1 assist. COL: Goalie Connor Alentado 20 blocks. GP (16-9).

Softball

Dr. Krop softball remained undefeated, winning its eighth consecutive game, thanks to an all-around team effort led by junior Jenna Opalak.

Palmer Trinity edged Pine Crest with key hits from Dani Mendoza and Kinsey Cerda for the walk-off win, and Fort Lauderdale won a close one against St. Thomas Aquinas.

American Heritage-Plantation 10, American Heritage-Delray Beach 0: Ahead 4-0, the Patriots scored four more in the fourth as they improved to 5-6-1.

Baseball

The Western baseball team beat an equally good Taravella 14-4. The Wildcats (13-3) scored two in the first and five in the second for a 7-0 lead. Ahead 7-2, Western added four more in the fourth en route to the big win. The Trojans are 11-3.

Basketball

John Leon of Martin County High School was named the 2022 Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school basketball coaches and media representatives.

Leon was eligible for the top honor by being voted Class 6A Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year.

Class 7A Coach of the Year Andrew Moran of 7A state champion Columbus was third in the final voting.

Class 5A Coach of the Year Edward Schuler of 5A state champ Stranahan finished fourth, followed by Class 4A Coach of the Year Cilk McSweeney of 4A state champ Calvary Christian.

Lacrosse

BOYS: Gulliver Prep 14, Cypress Bay 5: Dominic Veloso 11 saves; Alec Ramoski 78-percent face off wins; Lucas Sullivan 5 ground balls, 2 takeaways; Ryan Noyes 5 goals, 1 assist; Hoban Noyes 3 goals, 1 assist. GP (10-4).
