State honors for Carlos Zambrano and more local boys’ soccer & basketball players and coaches

Carlos Zambrano of Doral Academy was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 6A Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year by the coaches and media.

Zambrano, a senior midfield/forward, helped Doral to its second straight state title by scoring a team-leading 14 goals with six assists. He is signed with Daytona College.

Other area boys’ soccer players in the running for Player of the Year in their respective classifcation were:

Class 7A: 2. Giancarlo Dostillo (Cypress Bay). Class 4A: 3. Alex Rodriguez (St. Brendan). Class 3A: 2. Jasper Broad (Ransom Everglades).

Some area boys’ soccer coaches received Coach of the Year honors in their respective classification under the Florida Dairy Farmers banner.

They were voted by coaches and media, too.

They are:

Colin Ilgner, Cypress Bay, Class 7A Coach of the Year.

Led his squad to a 21-1 record and the Class 7A state title. In 13 years as a head coach (eight at Cypress Bay and five at Somerset Academy) has compiled a 150-33-9 record with two other state titles in 2015 and 2017.

Pamela McDonald, Doral Academy, Class 6A Coach of the Year.

In her 14th year as the Doral boys’ soccer coach, McDonald led her squad to a 16-2-3 record and the school’s second straight Class 6A state title.

Tanger Mendonca, Belen Jesuit, Class 5A Coach of the Year.

In his 15th year as a head coach, Mendonca posted a 19-5-1 record and a second straight Class 5A state championship. He has an overall career record of 245-68-26, which includes another state title in 2016.

Davide Favaro, St. Brendan, Class 4A Coach of the Year.

Led his squad to a 17-1-3 record and the school’s first state soccer title. In six years at St. Brendan, Favaro has compiled a 54-22-10 record.

Some other area boys’ soccer coaches were listed in the coach of the year category.

Class 3A: 2. Dave Villano (Ransom Everglades). Class 2A: 3. Mariano Palau (Scheck Hillel).

Basketball

Three area coaches were named Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year in their respective classification as voted by coaches and media.

They are:

Andrew Moran, Miami Columbus, Class 7A Coach of the Year.

Led his squad to a 29-2 record and the Class 7A state title. In three years at Columbus, he has posted a 60-22 record.

Edward Schuler, Stranahan, Class 5A Coach of the Year.

Led his squad to a 27-3 record and the Class 5A state title. In two years at Stranahan, he has compiled a 32-8 record.

Cilk McSweeney, Calvary Christian, Class 4A Coach of the Year.

Led his squad to a 24-2 record and the Class 4A state title. In nine years, he has posted a 149-86 record, including a pair of Class 3A state titles in 2017 and 2021.

Here is how more local boys’ basketball coaches finished in the final voting for Coach of the Year in their respective classification.

Class 3A: 2. Anthony Shahbaz (Riviera Prep). Class 2A: 3. David Roe (Sagemont).

Here is how area boys’ basketball players finished in the final voting for Florida Dairy Farmers Player of the Year honors in their respective classification.

Class 7A: 2. Cameron Boozer (Columbus). Class 6A: 3. Kolby King (Pembroke Pines Charter). Class 4A: 2. Taylor Hendricks (Calvary Christian). Class 3A: 3. Esteban Lluberes (Riviera Prep).

Scholar Athlete Forms

Nomination forms for Miami Herald Scholar Athletes were sent via email to athletic directors. It includes photo requests of nominees. One boy and one girl per school. Questions, email hssports@miamiherald.com.

April 6 is when the Miami Herald will reveal All County winter sports selections (as well players of the year and coaches of the year) for Broward and Miami Dade counties.
