Doral Academy baseball wins Perfect Game tourney. Miami High volleyball wins event. Plus more

The Doral Academy baseball team won the Perfect Game Gulf Coast High School Showdown at the Panama City Beach Sports Complex in Panama City Beach.

The Firebirds went 3-1 including a walk-off 6-5 victory over No.15 nationally ranked Houston County from Warner Robbins, Georgia.

Alejandro Ludeiro went 2-for-4 with three RBI (one the winner). Adrian Santana was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.

Pedro Acosta was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run and also pitched three innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four. Winning pitcher Mike Torres tossed 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three. He also helped his cause with an RBI.

Trailing 5-3 in the fifth, Doral scored twice to even things. Earlier, the Firebirds (10-3) scored three times in the third to go ahead 3-2. Houston opened the game with two runs, and the Bears scored three more in the fourth to retake the lead.

Doral also defeated IMG Academy (Bradenton) 11-1 and Knoxville Catholic (Tennessee) 6-2.

In the victory over IMG, winning pitcher Frank Menendez hurled five innings, allowed one earned run on three hits. Torres struck out one in one shutout inning. Santana was 1-for-3 with four RBI, and Sebastian Berrios went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Jake Santos added two hits and an RBI.

In the win over Knoxville, winning pitcher Jake Gorelick allowed one earned run and struck out four in 5.1 innings. Santana was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Ludeiro went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Robert Rodriguez added a hit and scored.

Arnold (Panama City Beach) beat the Firebirds in the opener 1-0.

Mater Lakes Academy (11-3) competed as well. Those Bears also went 3-1. They defeated Har-Ber (Springfield, Arkansas) 1-0, Arnold (Panama City Beach) 7-1 and Mosley (Lynn Haven) 7-2. Houston County’s Bears beat Mater’s Bears 14-0.

The three-day tournament featured eight teams.

More baseball

True North 5, Archbishop Carroll 4 (9 inn.): Tied at 3 in the top of the ninth, sophomore Robert Alvarez hit a winning 2-run single. The Bulldogs scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but winning pitcher Matias Fischer, an 8th grader, ended the rally.

Sam Fischer, a junior, went 3-for-5 with 3 runs and an RBI, and Alvarez was 2-for-3. William Foss, another 8th grader, pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit. TN (5-6).

Belen Jesuit 12, Miami High 3: Brandon Amparo 3.1 IP, 2 K; Brandon De Goti 2-3, 2B, 3 RBI; Ernie Echevarria 2-3, 2 RBI; Mike Cruz 1-3, 3B, 2 RBI. BEL (7-5).

Western 8, Hialeah 2: WP Matthew Pita (2-0) 5 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 0 BB; Luis Lorenzo 3-4, HR, 2B, R, 2 RBI; Sean Kaelber 3-4, 2 R; Leandro Perez 2-3, 2 2B, R, RBI. WST (11-2).

Boys’ volleyball

The Miami High boys’ volleyball team finished first in the Silver Division of the Park Vista Invitational in Lake Worth.

In pool play, the Stingarees lost to Lake Mary 25-22, 25-20 but beat King’s Academy (West Palm Beach) 25-22, 21-25, 15-1 and Palm Beach Central 25-17, 25-15.

In the Silver semifinals, Miami High defeated Belen Jesuit 25-19, 25-19. In the Silver finals, Miami High beat Southwest 25-12, 20-25, 15-13.

Belen Jesuit went 3-2 in the Park Vista Invitational.

The Wolverines beat Palm Beach Gardens 25-12, 25-21; Boca Raton 25-20, 25-13; and Lake Brantley 25-13, 21-25, 15-10. They lost to Columbus 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 and Miami High 25-19, 25-19.

Tournament stat leaders for Belen:

Robert Henao 57 assists, 28 digs, 10 kills, 6 aces; Marcelo Morales 26 kills, 9 blocks; Anthony Lamelas 18 kills, 3 blocks; Joseph Gonzalez 12 kills, 30 digs.

Belen is 12-5.

South Broward d. St. Thomas Aquinas 25-18, 25-11, 25-12: Top Performers: Jonathan Hardaway highest hitting efficiency; Dagoney Stoudt 16 assists. SB (5-0).

Softball

Jenna Opalak whirled a no-hitter as the Krop softball team improved to 6-0 with a 17-0 victory over American.

Cheyenne Payne was 2-for-3, and Jaylene Tomlinson and Mai Lisa Atis each went 1-for-2.

In St. Brendan’s 5-4 win over Coral Reef, Ashley Saud drove in the winner with her one hit.

Golf

Luke Clanton of American Heritage-Plantation won the Azalea Invitational Amateur Golf Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.

Clanton, who lives in Miami Lakes, shot 4-under (68-72-69--209). A senior, he is a four-time Miami Herald All Broward Boys’ Golfer of the Year.

Miami’s Nicholas Prieto of Florida Christian finished fourth at 1-under (66-77-69--212). A junior, he was the Miami Herald All-Dade Boys’ Golfer of the Year.

At the tournament, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo competed but did not make the cut.

Lacrosse
