Unbeaten Belen excels at Gulliver Water Polo Invitational. Plus Pompano baseball and more

The unbeaten Belen Jesuit boys’ water polo team had an impressive showing at the Gulliver Prep Invitational.

The Wolverines (14-0) defeated Krop, St. Thomas Aquinas, Gulliver Prep, and Ransom Everglades at the invitational.

MORE GULLIVER INVITATIONAL

The Gulliver Prep girls’ water polo team was 3-1 in the Gulliver Invitational. The Raiders beat Krop, Miami Beach and Cutler Bay and their only loss was to (Massachusetts) Williston.

The Gulliver Prep boys’ team went 5-2. The Raiders beat Ransom Everglades, Miami Country Day, Krop, MAST and Miami Beach. They lost to Belen Jesuit and St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Gulliver Prep girls are 10-6. The boys are 13-6.

There was no tournament champion, just match play. The event attracted nine boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams.

BOYS: Gulliver Prep 16, MAST 10: Daniel Preston 7 goals, 1 steal; Parker Rosenthal 3 goals, 3 steals; Harry Sharma 2 goals, 2 timely field blocks; Goalie Lorenzo Jaime 6 saves. GP (12-4).

BOYS: Gulliver Prep 10, Miami Beach 7: Daniel Preston 3 goals, 2 steals, 1 assist; Parker Rosenthal 3 goals, 2 steals; Gabe Lewis-Keister 1 goal, 3 steals, 2 assists. GP (13-6).

Baseball

Pitchers Ryan Ward and Daviano Riba combined on a shutout as Pompano Beach defeated TERRA 9-0.

Ward allowed two hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings. Riba gave up one walk, no hits and struck out two in two innings to end the game.

In the first inning, the Golden Tornadoes offense received a jump-start when Charlie Tecza singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Pompano Beach (6-2) notched three more runs in the fourth inning.

Carlos Arcaya (3-4, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI), Evan Russo (1-3, 2B, BB, R, 2 RBI) and Gio Caffro (1-2, RBI, 2 runs, RBI) helped lead the charge offensively.

Douglas 10, Farragut-Knoxville, Tennessee 0: Leading 3-0, the Eagles broke it open with seven runs in the sixth.

Western 8, South Miami 4: The Wildcats won their sixth consecutive. Trailing 8-0, South Miami scored three times in the sixth, but it was too little too late.

Softball

Pembroke Pines Charter handed Key West its first loss of the season, outscoring the Conchs 10-8.

Tied at 8, the Jaguars scored twice in the top of the seventh. Trailing 8-4, Key West rallied with four in the bottom of the sixth to even things at 8.

Golf

Luke Clanton of American Heritage-Plantation tied for ninth at the 2022 Junior Golf Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville, South Carolina.

The annual tournament is one of the most prestigious junior events on the annual calendar and features top young golfers from around the world.

Clanton, who lives in Miami Lakes, scored 3-under par 213 (71-70-72) in the three-round competition. Clanton, a senior, is a four-time Miami Herald All Broward Boys’ Golfer of the Year.

Miami’s Nicholas Prieto of Florida Christian tied for 18th at 2-over 218 (73-70-75). Prieto, a junior, was the Miami Herald All-Dade Boys’ Golfer of the Year.
