Mater Lakes Academy second in 1A region wrestling. Champ Mocco avenges loss. Plus more results

The Mater Lakes Academy wrestling team finished ahead of defending state champ Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines, traditionally-strong Cardinal Gibbons and American Heritage-Delray Beach for Region 4-1A runner-up honors at Jensen Beach High School.

Quite an accomplishment for the Good News Bears.

Nine wrestlers from Coach Brandon Neifeld’s Mater Lakes Academy team will compete at state. They are: Kellen Mesina (4th at 106), Anthony O’Dell (4th at 113), Seventh grader Ethan Tran (2nd at 120), Malikai Badillo (4th at 126), Dylan Garcia (2nd at 132), Azakin Sejour (Region Champ at 145), Eric Hodge (4th at 160), Damian Soto (2nd at 220), Ethan Vergara (Region Champ at 285).

Somerset Academy, coached by Joe Blasucci, was the top Broward placer, third overall, with 10 heading to state. That is the most of any Broward team (Class 1A, 2A, 3A). They are: Lincoln Sledzianowski (2nd at 106), Matthew Velasco (3rd at 113), Raymond Greene (4th at 120), Kevin Concepcion (4th at 132), Rashad Hannon (4th at 138), Luis Bellon (4th at 152), Kendrick Hodge (Region Champ at 160), Matthew Jimenez (2nd at 285), Tristan Sainz (3rd at 126), and Michael Sainz (2nd at 145).

Cardinal Gibbons, coached by Jamel and Jamal Morris, placed fourth, second best of Broward teams, with seven advancing to state. Peyton Vargas (113) and Nik Yancey (126) won region titles. Danil Korochenskiy (160) was a region runner-up. Grant Cooper (220), Robert Limperis (152) and Jonathan Hudson (120) took third and Richard Tauriello (170) fourth.

Coral Springs Charter School 8th grader Michael Mocco avenged his 1A district final loss (9-7) at 182 pounds to state-ranked senior Joseph Nicolosi of American Heritage-Delray by beating him 6-5 for a 1A region title.

Mocco, the BCAA Champ and one of the BCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestlers, is 42-2 this season. He went 4-0 at regionals. Nicolosi is 30-5. They could meet again in the state semifinals or state finals.

Lemon Bay senior Lance Schyck, last season’s state champ at 182, is wrestling at 182 again this season. Last season, Nicolosi was the state runner-up to Schyck at 182. Mocco, as a seventh grader last season, missed qualifying for state at 152 by one match.

On a young and improving Coral Springs Charter team, Mocco is the lone Panthers wrestler to advance to state this season. The Panthers are coached by Eric Perez.

Jensen Beach High School made a cool podium from wrestling mats.
