Girls from Douglas, Mater Lakes, South Dade excel in region wrestling. Plus boys’ wrestling & more

The South Dade girls’ wrestling team, coached by Vic Balmeceda, Chino Duran and Humberto Reyna, won the inaugural FHSAA Region 4 championship at Wellington High School.

Region champs for the Buccaneers are Rebekkah Kinkade (100), Anisah Paz (145) and Ferny Hernandez (170).

The inaugural regional event featured qualifiers from 40-plus teams.

Region 4: Top 20 Team Results: 1. South Dade 169; 2. North Miami 125; 3. Norland 79; 4. Mater Lakes Academy 75; 5. Western 63; 6. Wellington 62; 7. Treasure Coast 61; 8. Coral Park 42; 9. The Mater Lakes Academy girls’ wrestling team, coached by David Alvarez and Brandon Neifeld, placed fourth with just four wrestlers. Of those four, two won region titles and one was runner-up, qualifying three for state.

The region champs for the Bears are sophomore Sofia Ferran (110) and sixth-grader Arianna Ruiz (130). Junior Janice Quiroa (140) was the runner-up.

Sophomore Gaby Caro of Stoneman Douglas continues her standout season, winning a region title at 125 pounds en route to state. She is coached by Ken Gendason, Daniel Sanchez, Christian Baldwin and Richard Garcia.

More locals winning region titles were Lourdes Macias of Western at 115, Analy Banuelos of Braddock at 120, Mya Bethel of North Miami at 155, Day’Jah Clark of Miami Norland at 190, Shanakay Chambers of Miami Norland at 235 and Sofia Delgado of Coral Park at 140.

St. Thomas Aquinas had seven first-team selections on the Class 7A All-State team released by FloridaHSFootball.com recently.

Four of those players were on offense led by senior quarterback Zion Turner. He was joined by senior running back Anthony Hankerson, senior tight end Mason Taylor and senior offensive lineman Tellek Lockette. On defense, senior lineman Kyrie Samuel was joined by senior linebacker Derrieon Craig and junior defensive back King Mack.

Dillard senior defensive lineman Nyjalik Kelly and sophomore defensive back Antione Jackson also made the first team, as did Homestead junior wide receiver Richard Dandridge and Miramar senior defensive lineman Claudel Bazile.

Western led all South Florida teams in this classification, released recently by FloridaHSFootball.com, with three first-team selections.

Junior quarterback Collin Hurst and senior wide receiver Tyreik Thorpe made it on offense while senior linebacker Percy Courtney made it on defense. Miami Columbus had two first-team honorees with senior kicker Luis Palenzuela and senior defensive lineman John Starman. Deerfield Beach senior defensive lineman Deshawn Willoughby and Miami Palmetto defensive back Mike Jackson also made the first team.
