South Dade girls’ wrestling makes history. Douglas, Mater Lakes, Somerset, too, and more scores

South Dade wrestling continues to make history, but this time in the girls’ division.

The South Dade girls’ wrestling team placed first in an inaugural FHSAA district tournament.

The Buccaneers scored 206 points in the District 16-1A Tournament at Coral Park High School. North Miami was runner-up at 198. Mater Lakes Academy was third at 73, followed by Coral Park at 63 and Norland at 56.

Mater Lakes Academy placed third with just four wrestlers, and they all qualified for regionals. They are District Champ Sofia Ferran (110); 4th Angelina Vaquer (115); District Champ Arianna Ruiz (130); 3rd Janice Quiroa (140).

Freshman Rachel Silva (110) became the first district champion for Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines girls’ wrestling. She competed in the District 15-1A Tournament at Coral Springs High School.

Gaby Caro made some history, too, by becoming the first district champion in girls’ wrestling for Stoneman Douglas. Caro, a sophomore, placed first at 125 pounds, qualifying for regionals.

This is the first season for FHSAA sanctioned girls’ district wrestling tournaments. Regionals and state follow.

Soccer

The Mater Lakes Academy boys’ soccer team won the District 15-4A Championship by beating Miami Jackson 3-1.

Jason Hurtado and Eliel Rivera each had a goal and an assist to lead the Bears (11-5-1). Kevin Yulkowski also scored.

Prior, Mater Lakes Academy defeated North Miami Beach 3-1.

Ina region quarterfinal, Cardinal Gibbons (15-2-2) eliminated the Bears 1-0. Cardinal Gibbons continued its winning ways, beating Gulliver Prep 1-0 to advance to the region finals, before losing 1-0 to St. Brendan.

The coaches are Kevin Correa and Edgar Carro.

Basketball

BOYS: 2A Region QF: True North 75, Sheridan Hills 56: Starting 8th grade guards J-Roc Lopez and Boosie Swan combined for 45 points as the Titans advanced to a region semifinal against Miami Christian.

BOYS: 7A Region QF: Columbus 78, Flanagan 36: The Explorers scored the first 7 baskets on their way to building a 41-18 halftime advantage. With 3:40 left in the third period, Columbus scored 31 points to force a running clock. The Explorers (25-2) made 10 three-pointers in the second and third quarters. Freshmen Cayden Boozer, Cameron Boozer and Benny Fragela combined for 49 points.

Football Honors

Class 3A

Fresh off its fourth state championship in the past five years, Chaminade-Madonna had the most first team selections in the Class 3A All-State football team, released recently by FloridaHSFootball.com.

The Lions had seven led by sophomores Cedrick Bailey at quarterback and Davion Gause at running back. Junior offensive lineman Deandre Duffus also made the first team. The Lions’ senior defensive end tandem of Kenyatta Jackson and Jamaal Johnson made it on defense along with junior linebacker Jeno Junius and sophomore defensive back Zaquan Patterson.

Miami Edison also had a pair of first-team selections in junior Nathaniel “Ray Ray” Joseph and senior defensive lineman Francois Nolton Jr.

Class 4A

Reigning state champion Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons had the most selections on first team with six on the Class 4A All-State football team released recently by FloridaHSFootball.com.

Junior running back Kamari Moulton was joined by senior offensive linemen John Bock and Jackson Crozier on offense. On defense, the Chiefs had senior defensive lineman R Mason Thomas as well as senior linebacker Tray Brown and junior defensive back Tre’Mone Drisdom.

Miami Gulliver Prep had five first team selections led by senior quarterback Carson Haggard and senior wide receiver De’Carlo Donaldson on offense. Junior defensive lineman Lamont Green Jr. and senior linebacker Jayvon Only made it on defense. Senior Will Bettridge was the first team kicker.

Rounding out the South Florida contingent on the first team was Monsignor Pace senior defensive lineman Shemar Stewart.
