LaSalle boys’ soccer in region final. Plus basketball, football, lacrosse, tennis, water polo
Kike Sosa scored twice with both assists from Santiago Sanchez as the LaSalle boys’ soccer team edged University School 2-1 in a 3A region semifinal.
For University (14-3-2), Tommy Abramzon scored off an assist from Rafael Matiello, and freshman keeper Matthew Jean Baptiste was outstanding.
In the 27th minute, Sanchez passed to Sosa who made a beautiful finish for a 1-0 lead. Fifteen minutes into the second half, University evened things with the Abramzon goal.
Because of two yellow cards to a player (red card ejection), University competed down one with 10 players for the final 25 minutes. LaSalle took advantage, and with seven minutes remaining, Andres Gutierrez sent a 40-yard pass across the field to Sanchez, who beat two University defenders and found Sosa for the winning goal.

District basketball
About two weeks ago, Columbus boys’ basketball took home its first GMAC Championship. The Explorers followed up recently by winning another tournament, garnering the District 15-7A Championship to begin its playoff run.
It marks their first district title since 2011.
Columbus beat Miami High 82-61 at Doral Academy’s Gym in the district final. Columbus scored 26 second-quarter points to open up a 28-point halftime lead.
Given the Explorer’s defensive prowess, that’s an insurmountable halftime lead, but Miami High never quit, putting up an impressive 29-point fourth quarter. Yet even that effort left Miami High 21 points short.
The Boozer brothers had exactly half of the Explorers’ total scoring output with 41 points (22 from Cayden and 19 from Cameron), but make no mistake about it, it was an extraordinary team effort at both ends of the floor with hustle, ball screens, motion, movement, rebounding, assists, anticipation and always looking ahead to the next pass.
Sophomore Malik Abdullahi recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Garyn Bess, a rock-steady performer, had 8 points, 4 assists, took 2 charges and was behind 4 defensive gems. To go along with his 19 points, Cameron had 12 rebounds. Cayden added 5 rebounds and 5 assists with his 22 points.
Both teams advance to the region quarterfinals on Thursday. Columbus plays Flanagan, and Miami High faces West Broward.
