Wrestling

Wet weather forced Columbus wrestling’s annual “Under the Stars” match indoors this season.

The event is traditionally on the school’s football field.

Under the gym lights in 2022, the Explorers wrestled last season’s state dual team runner-up Wellington.

For Head Coach James Husk, Columbus edged Wellington 36-34, before a large crowd.

The Explorers honored their eight senior wrestlers, accompanied by their parents. They are Christian Guzman (120 pounds), Michael Lynne (132), Aiden Gasper (138), Van Huffman (152), Rocco D’Ascoli (160), Alejandro Cerecedo (170), Javier Taylor (182), T.J. Brown (195).

Former Columbus Head Coach Dave Isenberg (1987-92) was also acknowledged. He coached two state champions, including Sam Ancona, who beat University of Miami and NFL alum Ray Lewis in the state finals.

Against Wellington, returning state champ Christian Guzman (120 pounds) scored a pin. Teammates Gasper (138), D’Ascoli (160), Taylor (182), and Brown (195) also scored pins, and Derrick Hart (285) won by forfeit.
