LaSalle sailing wins regatta, and locals excel at Orange Bowl event. Plus golf and wrestling
LaSalle dominated in its fourth district sailing regatta of the season, besting a fleet of 16 varsity high school teams from throughout Florida.
The event, SAISA sanctioned, was at the University of South Florida branch campus in St. Petersburg.
In addition to winning the overall event, LaSalle won the A and B divisions and seven of the day’s races.
Sophomore Umi Noritake earned the lowest points of the regatta in B Division with 25 points for an average finish of 2 ½ over 10 races.
LaSalle finished with 63 total points, 31 points better than runner-up Ransom Everglades (94 points).
Division A was skippered by Mitchell Callahan with juniors Danny Riano and Caroline Caudron alternating as crew. Division B was skippered by Umi Noritake with veteran senior Brianna Ross and sophomore Jadin Gonzalez as crew.

Senior twins Justin and Mitchell Callahan were accepted to Harvard, and Brianna Ross is headed to Brown.
The South Atlantic District South Division (SAISA) encompasses Florida, except the Florida
Panhandle and the Caribbean.
LaSalle will continue training and will resume competition on Feb. 26, hosted by Ransom Everglades.
Last year’s event was restricted from having spectators due to Covid, but this year spectators can view the racing from Ransom Everglades’s football field.

More sailing
Nearly 600 sailors from 20 countries converged on Coconut Grove last month for the 2021 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta (OBIYR), hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club.
Westminster Christian School senior Enzo Menditto (skipper) and MAST Academy sophomore Julien Waite (crew) placed second in the Club 420 class.

Of the 10 races during the four-day event, they totaled multiple first, second and third place finishes.
The Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta remains the largest international youth regatta in the country.
Wrestling
Doral Academy wrestling celebrated Senior Night with a 60-24 win over Coral Reef.
Before the match, the Firebirds honored their three seniors: Josh Gutierrez (132); Enrique Sanchez (138), Alejandro Mendez (160).
Sanchez, a four-year starter, surpassed the 100 career win mark. He is a district champion and state qualifier.
Golf
Columbus alum Roberto Nieves was sixth at the Latin America Golf Championship.
Nieves (Class of 2018) held the lead after three days. He came up just short in his quest to qualify as an amateur at the Masters and Open championship.
He is currently in his final season at the University of Delaware and will be transferring to Pepperdine in the fall.
